Nick’s heart twisted.

It’s just a dog, but he loved that Frenchie and remembered Mulberry giving Noodle pets, not even minding his slobber.

“Sure, I’d love to. The new owners know I want to stay in touch?”

“The new owners are thrilled. You won’t have a problem.” Meera laughed.

“Meera?”

“You’re going to take Noodle to a house in Tsawwassen. Tomorrow okay?”

His palms suddenly grew sweaty. “Is it someone I know? Otherwise, you’ve got my hopes up and my mind jumping in the wrong places.”

“No, I’m sure your guess is correct. Can you make it here by eleven tomorrow?”

“Of course,” Nick said.

“Great,” Meer said and hung up.

Nick tapped his knuckles on the bar, wondering what this meant. Did it mean Mulberry was going to live here? Or maybe it was Grace and Cassie?

Maybe he wouldn’t even see her tomorrow.

Nick frowned, tempted to call Meera back, but he hesitated.

If this was Mulberry’s way of showing him she wanted him in her life, he wanted to give her that chance.

CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE – MULBERRY

It wasn’t only her grandma, Emma, her mom or aunt who couldn’t understand why she and Nick weren’t together.

Mulberry parted the curtains, peering out the window.

For once, everyone interested in her life worked to her advantage.

When she called Meera, the dog sanctuary owner went out of her way to help.

And to conspire.

“I’d never seen Nick so relaxed and happy than when he was with you,” Meera had said.

“I feel the same way about him,” Mulberry assured her. “And Noodle gets a home out of it.”

As she waited for her mom’s dog to arrive at his forever home, she couldn’t stop fidgeting. Refilling the water, fluffing the dog pillow, refolding the blanket she’d set in the crate.

“Mulberry, it’s good,” Grace said, entering the living room.

Mulberry pulled open the curtains, letting the grey wintry light in, watching the snowfall.

“I know. Thanks for taking Noodle.”

“I’d do anything to make you happy, but rescuing this Frenchie is more for me than you.”

“We need a companion,” Aunt Cassie said, joining them at the window.

Her mom smiled, but the skin around her eyes was tight. Grace had taken Sheldon’s betrayal hard, blaming herself for putting Mulberry in danger.

And after shooting that movie over the holidays, her mom decided she was done.
