Emma’s silence as she dug into her food screamed at her, but Mulberry didn’t know what to make of it. Was she upset at her for hiding Nick, or did it have something to do with Sheldon?

“You got to try this. Open” Nick held a fork to her mouth.

Mulberry wanted to tell him no. He couldn’t feed her, but the smouldering look in his eyes had her obeying. She opened. He fed her the forkful. Mulberry chewed, trying not to look at Emma or Nick.

“You guys are so cute,” Emma said.

“We are,” Mulberry agreed.

Nick squeezed her arm.

“So weird you felt like you had to hide it. I mean, your mom must be so happy you’re doing something other than staying in your room, crying. But I’m sure you know what she’s like, Nick, right?”

Mulberry put her fork down, her face red. “Emma, that was kind of mean.”

“Not mean, I’m just wondering.”

“It’s not any of your business, Emma. Maybe if you had checked on Mulberry more often, she’d felt more comfortable revealing our relationship. Did you think that maybe she was afraid of telling you because you’d grill me? Or think Mulberry can’t handle a relationship?”

His steely tone caused Emma to look away.

“You’re right. I’m sorry. I feel left out. I’m trying to be happy about this gig, but you know it’s not what I want. Your parents don’t care what you do, Mulberry.”

“I know, Emma,” Mulberry said.

“Sorry.”

“Apology accepted, Emma,” Nick’s voice, like smooth honey, made her heart skip. “Tell me more about the role you got.”

And for one out there moment, Mulberry wished this was real, that he actually cared about her because it was nice having someone stand up for her.

CHAPTER NINE – NICK

“Come on, Mulberry! We can’t be late,” Nick called, checking his watch.

He stopped pacing the floor between the hallway and the kitchen and leaned against the wall, willing the bathroom door to open.

The idea of introducing Mulberry to his family gave him an acidic taste in the back of his mouth. His family would be thrilled. But their relationship was a lie.

It’s the job.

And as long as Mulberry chose to stay in the safety of Axis Management’s suite, she was making it much easier.

He’d asked her to come home last night, but she wanted one more night here.

Nick didn’t press it, but it grated on his nerves, but clearly, she wasn’t comfortable with her own plan of being in the spotlight.

Maybe that’s what was taking the woman so long to get dressed. “Mulberry! Come on, my Maman doesn’t forgive being late!”

“I’m here, relax, lover,” she grabbed her purse off the coffee table and gave a twirl. “So, do I pass?”

Nick swallowed, shoving his hands in his pockets to keep his hands off her because he wanted to swipe those loose waves off her shoulder and kiss her freshly applied gloss off her lips.

Her dark green dress fit her perfectly, hugging her breasts, the skirt flowing over her hips, and her matching heels showing off her legs.

How would those legs feel wrapped around my waist? He shook the thought away.

“Yes, you’ll do fine,” Nick mumbled. “Let’s go.”
