But they kept surging. Someone reached out and almost touched her arm before the bodyguard stepped to her side and shielded her.

“We’re going to turn around and walk out now,” the female bodyguard said. She stood in front of Grace, blocking the crowd.

“Grace! We love you!” a woman with a long braid shouted.

“Can you sign this?” A pad of paper was thrust under her face.

Mulberry closed her eyes, biting the inside of her cheek.

Okay, this hadn’t been the most fantastic idea.

But she wanted it to be over.

She didn’t want to hide away, and she didn’t like the negative attention from the media.

Was it so wrong to just want to go into a store with her own mother?

Her mom smiled, grabbed her arm and turned, following the bodyguards out, but a hand was placed above her waist.

“What stunt is this, my little firecracker?” His calm tone pushed the anxiety away, replacing it with the annoyance she felt at him.

She placed her hand on his arm.

“Thanks for coming, boyfriend,” she grinned at him.

He grabbed her hand, marching her to his car in the parking lot.

“Mulberry! We got some great shots of you and your mom,” a photographer said, with Gltiz magazine badge around his neck. “Call me if you need anything.”

He passed her a business card.

Nick took it in his fingers. “She won’t call you.”

The photographer put up his hands. “Okay,” he said and walked away.

“What were you thinking?” Nick growled in her ear.

“That I wanted to go out with my mom. I told you that.”

“You didn’t tell me you had called the media.”

The disappointment in his tone made her feel so very small.

“Nick, are you taking Mulberry? She and Grace came in Grace’s car,” the female bodyguard asked.

“Yes, she’s riding with me.”

“Honey, I’ll see you later,” Grace said.

Mulberry hugged her mom. “Sorry, I guess it wasn’t a good idea.”

“You tried something. Hopefully, this will be behind you soon. Give it another week, and if nothing has changed, we can evaluate?”

“Yeah. I’ll call you later.”

“Take care of her, Nick,” Grace said.

“Doing my best,” Nick glared at her.
