I fought the urge to laugh.

This witch was strong, but he wasn’t stronger than me.

This time I reached out, grabbing the magic he had sent towards me. I felt the rage in it, the desire to hurt. The desire to kill. I pulled it through the palm of my hand, letting it burn through my blood and bones before changing the energy to something different.

Protection.

The two demons at his side lunged for me, trying to corner me into the kitchen. I pulled on the energy of the spell, turning the floor into water.

Both of them fell through, their confused faces giving me a moment of satisfaction.

One of them snarled, shadow tentacles reaching for me. I jumped up onto the kitchen counter, hopping down on the other side.

The bedroom door flew open and Anne made a face of shock, but I flicked my hand, slamming it back shut.

I could do this alone.

Alex, I swear to the gods, if you don’t open this fucking door, I will hang you by your balls.

Hazard and I slammed into each other, the two of us rolling over the couch and crashing into the coffee table. The wood cracked as I pinned him beneath me, overpowering his magic with mine.

His body went stiff, his face contorted with rage.

“You bastard,” Hazard growled.

“Me?” I scoffed. “What the hell did I ever do to you Hazard?”

“You let him win,” Hazard whispered. “You let him come back. And all of us who had finally moved on were dragged back into YOUR WAR!”

I sat back, shocked by his words.

The bedroom door flew open and Anne and Sylvia ran out, both ready to fight. I could feel Anne seething, but we’d talk later.

“There are two demons in the kitchen,” I said, waving away the spell that altered the room. “They should be trapped in the floor.”

I stood up, leaving Hazard frozen on the table. I sighed, taking a seat on the couch.

“I didn’t mean for any of this to happen,” I said to him.

“It doesn’t matter,” Hazard said, finally relaxing. “I’m fucked up. I like hurting people now, because it was either get used to it or die. But still. I’m tired. I want out. I’ve betrayed friends, monsters, witches, humans. I thought he was dead and then we were called up.”

“Why are you telling me?” I asked.

I let him turn his head and he did, looking straight at me. “I want out,” he whispered. “He will kill me for that though.”

“I could kill you,” I said.

“You could,” Hazard said, letting his head fall back on the table. “If you wanted to.”

“I don’t want to,” I said with a shrug.

Sylvia and Anne came back to the living room, both of them glaring at Hazard.

He looked at them both, his eyes widening. “Hi Anne.”

I’d forgotten they had worked together.

Anne only hissed. “Fuck you.”
