ANNE

After we hadfake-murdered someone in the middle of the night, Alex made a portal straight to Inferna’s apartment and the three of us showed up on their doorstep.

Inferna opened the door wearing nothing but a silky black slip, her eyes glazed over with sleep and her temperament already prickly.

“Good morning,” I said, wincing.

Inferna blinked a few times and then stepped to the side, bidding us into her apartment. I had worked with her long enough to know what her motions meant, and that a pot of coffee needed to be brewing right now.

“Sorry about this,” Alex said to her, shutting the door behind him. “We’ve run into a problem.”

“Oh, I’m sure,” she said dryly. “You’re still in heat, Alex. What happened to fucking until you break it?”

“Alfred sent Hazard and some demons to my house.”

“Well,” Inferna sighed. “Fucking hell.”

Art and Calen were already in the kitchen making coffee. It felt weird to see my other boss shirtless and in boxers, but hey— at least they’d managed that before answering the door.

Sylvia’s hand slipped into mine and I gave her a gentle squeeze. I wished we would have mated last night, craving for there to be a bond between us.

Still, I could feel echoes of her through Alex, and then there was the connection we already had. She gave me a soft smile, one that worried me just a bit.

I had been through some crazy shit at the office the last few months, but none of it had been like what she had gone through, and I worried that the demons coming back to haunt us would hurt her.

She looked up at me, raising a brow. “I’m fine,” she murmured.

“Okay,” I said, giving her hand one more squeeze before letting go.

“I’m assuming everyone wants coffee,” Art called.

“Yes,” we all answered.

Inferna went to the living room, Calen leaving the kitchen to curl up next to her on the couch as she took a seat.

Sylvia grabbed Alex’s hand and dragged him to another seat before he could melt from his apparent anxiety of invading their home this early in the morning.

Art pulled down several mugs and I went to help, the two of us pouring coffee and bringing them all to the coffee table that sat in the center of the room.

Alex leaned forward, burying his face in his hands for a moment with a sigh. “I hate this. I hate him. I don’t even know how he knew where I was, or how Hazard was able to break in.”

“What happened to Hazard?” Calen asked.

“We made it look like he died,” I said. “Alex decided to spare him. The demons lost their memories of what happened and were sent on their way too.”

Inferna snatched a mug up, settling back against the cushion, Calen leaning against her side. Art took a seat next to him, his hand settling on his hip.

There was such an easiness between the three of them, one that I hoped Alex and Sylvia and I would gain too. Alex would have to learn how to trust us first.

Alex ran his fingers through his dark hair, looking up at me as I took another seat, my tail curling around it. I cradled a cup of coffee, still digesting everything that had happened.

I didn’t like being woken up suddenly. I rarely slept, and when I actually did, to be yanked from it so quickly immediately put me on edge. If Sylvia wouldn’t have been there to calm me down, things would have gone differently. Hazard would be literally dead, not fake dead, and those demons would have been back in hell.

I cradled a cup of coffee to me, thinking about Alfred. We had done our best to ensure we weren’t being followed, but it was difficult to make sure that there weren’t spies in other places.

“We tried to make sure we weren’t followed—”
