I leapt up, my legs attaching to the wall. All three of them let out little squeals, but I was already moving rapidly.

We went up higher and higher, passing the staircases and landings easily.

We passed one of the landings, and I saw a dark figure emerge from the corner of two of my eyes. Ember let out a shout, and I felt her blast magic towards it, guarding our group.

Voices shouted above, confusion raining over our enemies as I took us past them in a blur. They were left confused and or passed out as Ember continued to send blasts of magic towards them.

We made it to the ninth floor and I stopped, cutting the silk loose. Ember, Billy, and Charlie hit the landing, rolling to their feet ready to keep fighting.

I could hear footsteps thundering as a couple other creatures came from above.

“Where the fuck is B team?” Billy growled. “I thought all these bastards were supposed to be out.”

“I’m sure they’re handling other stuff,” Charlie quipped.

I gave in to the primal tide, allowing that part of me to take over even more. An orc and a witch hit our landing, but with three shots of my webs, the two of them were slammed into the guard rail and then sent tumbling over the other side.

Ember, Charlie, and Billy all turned to look at me with wide eyes.

“Can’t ever trust the quiet ones,” Billy mumbled. “I should have known that.”

Ember made a face and then went to the door, kicking it open. The three of them went into the office, and I squeezed through the doorway, slamming it shut behind us.

The office was…

Silent.

It felt like a library, a forbidden one. One that we should not have been allowed in.

“I… don’t like this,” Billy whispered.

I didn’t either. I stared down the hallway, my hearts pounding.

I could feel my bond to Alex tighten for a moment, his concerns coming through. Now, more than anything, I wished I had one with Anne too, but I had to trust that she was okay.

I closed all of my eyes for a moment, taking a breath. We had to trust each other. That was the hardest part about everything, but…

We would find Cinder, Mich, and Lora. We would take out Alfred, and then everything would be okay.

The four of us crept down the hallway, me following behind the three of them as I took up the entire space now. The lights continued to flicker, and now…now I heard a heartbeat.

“Close,” I whispered.

The three of them nodded, all of our attention on high alert.

Art’s office was not far now, just around the corner and on the other side of the floor.

Billy peeked around the corner and let out a hiss, looking back at us.

“I can see them,” he whispered. “Cinder. They’re tied up right in the doorway. There are two witches there.”

Ember glared, her anger rising. “I can take care of them.”

“I can help,” I said.

The four of us looked at each other, a silent agreement being made.

It was time to fight— claws, webs, magic, and tentacles combined.
