She shrugged. “I don’t know.”

I brought out her inner Xena—got it.

“Want some ice?” I tossed at my brother.

“There are…” He coughed. “…peas…” He groaned. “…in the freezer.”

MC was already there, though. Peas in hand, she knelt in front of Sin. “I won’t say sorry, Padraig, because you shouldn’t have hurt Digger. But it’s a pleasure to meet you and I promise I won’t do it again.” She paused. “Unless you hurt Digger. I won’t stand for that.”

Sin rolled his forehead on the ground and peered at me. “She…” He moaned. “…for real?”

“She’s for real.” I hid a smile when I saw she had a frozen bag of chopped onions, smaller than the peas, for my throat. “A surprise though, ain’t she?”

“I am here, you know?” She frowned and gasped. “Oh, shit. Sarah!” She picked up her phone from the counter, where I saw she’d put it before, and murmured, “Sorry, Sarah. I was just meeting my brother for the first time. How did it go? About as well as can be expected. What is it with men? Digger saves me from a fate worse than death and Padraig, who wasn’t even here, decides to go allLethal Weaponon him!”

“Hey, I…” Sin hissed. “...can hear…” He sputtered. “…you.”

MC just sniffed. “Good. You shouldthankDigger, Padraig. I’m going to finish my conversation with my best friend, and by the time I return, I want to restart our first meeting, understood?”

I blinked at her surprisingly bossy tone.

“Under…stood.”

My lips twitched as I scrabbled over so that I could lean against the cupboard door at his side.

Watching the sway of her hips as she moved away, I muttered gruffly, “She’s happy.”

Sin grunted.

“Why were you guys away for so long? You should have been here, man.”

“Pedo moved. Chased. Lost. Found again.”

“He’s dead now?”

“Yeah.” Groaning, Sin sagged onto his back, but he kept his knees high, the bag of peas squeezed between them. “Fuck, she got me good.”

“Should have seen her point a gun at O’Donnelly Sr. She’s got more of a backbone than you’d think at first.”

“More like you’ve been a bad influence,” he complained.

My lips quirked into a grin. “You might be right.”

He sniffed. “Don’t sound so proud.”

“Why not? I want to keep her, Sin.”

“Keep her?” He pshawed. “She ain’t a toy.”

“Never said that she was. But I mean it. One day, I’m going to brand her.”

Sin jerked upright, bag of peas and his broken dick be damned. “You had better be fucking kidding me.”

I ducked away from his incoming fist and grabbed a hold of it between mine before I jerked his arm to the side to the point where I could have twisted it out of the socket.

With a warning glare, I promised him, “I’m not kidding. It started weird and it’s getting weirder, but I’m finding that I like weird. Especially her variety of it.”

He stared at my hold on his arm. There was a real threat to the move—he knew I wasn’t bullshitting around. “You care about her?”
