“What?” I asked wanting to squirm under his gaze.

“Nothing,” he looked away.

Rolling my eyes, I asked again. “What?”

“I just didn’t realize you wore glasses.”

Absentmindedly, I touched at my face. “Oh…yeah. Sometimes, I forget I wear them too.”

We went back to our comfortable silence, and I pulled out my phone from the computer bag by my feet. My sister Rain had been texting before takeoff and I could answer her now.

I can’t believe you’re going to Italy…you lucky whore.

Oh yeah,I replied. So lucky. I’ve been forced to help Mr. DeLuca’s ….whatever he is find his sister.

Well make sure you have some fun.

Hah! Fun is taking a nap.

My eyes watched the bubbles populate on the other screen, rising and falling as my sister typed her message back.

Baby girl, if you talk about taking one more nap I’m going to lose my mind.

Shut up,I texted back furiously.I like my sleep.

My sister sent back some emoji and I noticed Mason’s eyes were on me again.

“Can I help you?”

“You just seem really into your phone. Boyfriend?”

He’s on a fishing expedition with that one,I wanted to cringe.

“No,” I replied putting my phone away. “My sister.”

“Oh,” he nodded. “Are you and her close?”

“I’m close to most of my family. I have three older brothers and one older sister.”

“So that would make you the baby?”

“Yes, even though Rain is a year older, she swears she’s my mother,” an easy laugh made its way out of me.

The pilot came on the intercom as we started to hit some turbulence. My stomach gave a rumble, and I couldn’t wait for him to land the hunk of metal. Mason, instead of being alarmed at how the air craft was shaking, seemed to lean even further back into his seat.

He’s enjoying this…

Then I remembered he flew choppers. Sometimes when Mr. DeLuca wanted to avoid traffic in the city, he’d have Mason fly him to whatever meeting destination was on the docket for the day.

Deciding to follow his lead, I leaned my head back into the cushy leather head rest and relaxed my body. My hands slowly released the death grip on the arms of the seat and I felt myself falling back into an easy rest.

Nearly twelve hours had passed since I’d been on firm American soil. We arrived in Italy in pure darkness but I’d had a car arranged to meet us at the private tarmac and spirited us away to a hotel. Wheeling my suitcase through the door, along with Mason the bright light seemed to sting my eyes. Bright green hues that rolled into an uglier sea foam green decorated the lobby. Green was everywhere right down to fresh green apples sitting on the front desk for guests to take if they wanted it.

The Hyperion Rome was a five star hotel but the decor screamed two star.

The workers at the front desk smiled and greeted us as we checked in.

“We have two rooms available,” the hotel’s night auditor smiled, but she wasn’t looking at me.
