The bartender took my order and I pulled out my phone. My text message app urged me to pull it open and I did. Mason was still pinned to the top of my messages.

My finger hovered over his name…

“Here ya go,” the bartender slid me my drink. “One amaretto sour for the lady.”

The moment I took a sip, I remembered Italy. Flashes of Mason pinning me up against the wall, me trying to coax him into fucking me in my hotel room.

Making my way back over to the table, the subject had turned to something else.

“Girl you’re the one covering that shit, how do you do it?” Rain was in the thick of it.

My sister could make friends with a paper bag. She was just so relatable and that was why when women left her chair, they felt a million times lighter than when they’d come in. She would do their hair, shampoo out their sins and worries before making them beautiful.

“W-what, what is she covering?” All eyes turned to me as I sipped on my drink.

“I work for the Seattle Sentinel. I’ve been covering the Rosary Killer.”

“Oh,” I remarked interested as I remembered Mason had had me run that footage.

Illegally, might I add,I thought.

“Well, I’ve been trying to talk to the lead agent on the case at the FBI. Things seemed to have to cooled down a lot. I’ve talked with a few of the victims close relatives and friends. They feel the FBI isn’t doing enough.”

“When black and brown girls go missing, it does seem that the bare minimum is done concerning us,” Brie sighed.

“Preach!” Rain sipped more wine.

They went on discussing the Rosary Killer and my thoughts turned back to Italy. I wanted to call Mason. I wanted to text him something stupid.

Taking my phone back out, I did. I opened up my phone, found his name and composed a text message.

Happy Halloween.

That was it.

That was the entire message.

Text bubbles, rose and so did my heart rate. He was immediately replying, and I hadn’t been prepared for this at all. Then, the bubbles stopped.

I wanted to fall into a bottomless pit but I sucked it up. After all, I’d been the fucking one to tell him to get his shit and leave. I felt so childish, I wish I could take the fucking message back.

In a pitiful attempt to seem cheerful, I exclaimed that I wanted to dance.

“Really?” My sister asked.

“Yes,” I replied. “Coming?”

“Girl, I’m trying to crack this case,” Rain laughed. “Go have fun. I’ll join you in a few minutes.”

I kissed her cheek and left her talking with Brie and her gang. I wasn’t stupid, Rain knew that damn wedding was coming up at some point. Her toxic ass was going to laugh at all their jokes and smile in an attempt to win over Brie’s business.

She was a mad genius.

The dance floor was crowded. The D.J. had some hip hop spinning and the amaretto had my senses tingling. Any tension that I’d been feeling had melted out of my body. Moving my body to the beat, I felt someone tap my shoulder.

Thinking it was Rain, I found myself face to face with the stranger from the office.

“Hey,” he smiled, hollering over the beat of the music. His breath tickled my ear.
