For the first time, I noticed there were other faces on the screens. I realized then that this was a video feed. He was going to stream this shit all over the internet. A countdown clock ticked away in the corner. A countdown to midnight.

To Mason’s impending doom.

I needed to get out of this chair.

Augustus picked up a briefcase. “This has been lovely chatting with you but I must be on my way.”

“You can’t even stay to watch the shit you’ve set in motion?” I spat at him.

He laughed. “You are spirited, I can see why he’s fallen for you. You remind me of my late wife, Alaska. She was a half Lummi Native. Did Mason ever tell you about her?”

A shudder went through me as I connected the dots, and I shook my head no.

That’s why he loved Alaska,my thoughts tugged back to finding him there.

“That’s a shame,” Augustus shrugged already at the door. “And now you’ll never know.”

Gisella was a flash of white chinchilla followed by Augustus. The door closed behind them quietly. They were gone and my eyes went back to the screen. Shadowy figures were tuned in, and Tobias was just standing there waiting.

My wrists were still bound but I was slowly working my way out of my bindings. Two things were on my mind: Mason and escaping.

With pain searing through my flesh, I managed to get one wrist free. Looking over my skin, I noted the painfully red rope burns. It was raw from my pulling but I was somewhat closer to being free.

My chest was starting to feel tight, and I was sure that I was about to have some sort of panic attack.

The countdown clock started to sing it seemed. The ticking appeared to become louder and louder, and Tobias roared on the screen.

Midnight was fast approaching.

My mouth had gone dry as I fiddled with my other arm in another attempt to free myself. There was no way in hell—pun intended— that I was going to die tonight.

Or any night soon,I thought.

ChapterTwenty-Four

Mason

Sebastian was staring me down from across his desk. We’d turned his study into a war room once again. Just months earlier it’d been used to track down the men who had taken his children. The woman he’d been involved with, Eve Barron, she’d been behind the heinous attack that had nearly killed his twins.

“What do you need?” He asked.

“Excuse me!” Rain was shuffling into the room, looking highly upset.

I’d had Brie end her night of fun at the Halloween bash and bring Rain along. Briefly explaining what was going on, I’d told her to keep Rain in the dark until they arrived.

“Rain,” I nodded solemnly, ready to break the news.

“Where is my sister?” She asked looking around at everyone.

“Something’s happened...” I took a breath.

“It was that weirdo she was dancing with wasn’t it,” Rain stamped her foot, her hands going to her head.

I watched her pace and then confirmed. “I believe so.”

“We need to call the fucking cops,” Rain declared.

Matteo, who had come along with Carmine, cleared his throat. “I’m here to tell you…that might be a terrible idea.”
