Colt’s expression turned grave. “I’m honored, brother.”

A siren wailed in the distance, the sound of it getting louder as an ambulance approached, and Zip headed back inside.

“Time to pop that champagne to celebrate the new baby,” Mia said.

“And Doc deserves it,” Darcy said. “For delivering a baby at her own wedding.”

“Joni made this day perfect for Doc,” Boxer said.

“Getting married wasn’t perfect enough?” Allison asked.

Boxer grinned. “My woman is never happier than when she’s being a doctor. So, on the day she married me, she also got to do what she loves to do. Couldn’t have planned it better.”

Doc and Brooklyn came out into the back yard. Doc was still in her wedding dress, which was completely pristine.

“How are you still clean?” Jazz asked in shock.

“Brooklyn gave me an apron,” Doc said with a grin. “Joni and baby are in the ambulance on their way to the hospital, but everything went smoothly.”

Boxer strode to her, wrapped an arm around her shoulder, and pulled her to him. “We know how to throw a party, don’t we?”

“We sure do,” she agreed, beaming up at him.

“Found your ring,” he said.

She held out her hand and he slid it onto her finger. She caressed his cheek. “I need a drink.”

He kissed the top of her head. “You’ve earned it.”

“I earned it too,” Brooklyn said with a grin. “I lost an apron—and a mattress cover—to the cause. Guess I’ll have to settle for sparkling water, though.”

“I’ll put it in a champagne flute for you,” Brielle said. “Then you can be all fancy pants.”

We ate great food and drank cocktails. The jazz trio played and the sun trekked across the sky as the day turned to evening. The bugs came out, but citronella torches had been set up around the back yard and helped to keep them at bay.

I was sitting at a table by myself, enjoying a slice of wedding cake when Mia came over and sat down next to me, Scarlett asleep in her arms.

“She’s zonked out,” I said.

“Milk drunk. Combined with the jazz music, it’s like the ultimate soporific effect.”

“There is something soothing about the music,” I agreed. “I like that I can hear people talk over it, not struggle through some overly-loud heavy metal band.”

“Hmm. There is that.” Mia looked in the direction of Boxer and Doc, who were currently swaying against one another. Doc was nestled in Boxer’s arms, her eyes closed.

“It’s like they’ve forgotten we’re here,” Mia said with a soft smile.

“They look so happy,” I noted. “Like, reallyhappy.”

Duke and Savage were across the lawn, talking to Rachel. She said something and then Savage embraced her. I caught Duke’s eye and gave a little finger wave. He waved back.

“They’re not the only ones who are happy,” Mia teased.

“I’m happy. Things are good. Really, really good.” I grinned. “So good I’m not sure I even trust it.”

“Been there,” Mia drawled. “Been there.”

“Where have you been?” Darcy asked as she approached.
