“Let’s get back out there. They’ll kill me if they think I know any juicy details before them.”

“They don’treallythink I’m going to spill the beans about my sex life, do they?”

“What else do we talk about at brunches and parties?” she teased.

I laughed again and followed her back into the living room. I took a seat on the floor and set my drink on a coaster on the coffee table.

“Joni finally decided to put Everett in his crib for a nap,” Mia explained. “She’ll be back in just a minute.”

“And she told us you weren’t allowed to divulge anything until she’s back,” Darcy added. “Or there would be hell to pay.”

The women were all staring at me with amusement splayed across their faces, and I suddenly felt like I was in the hot seat. But I was finally about to become one of them, an Old Lady.

“Are you crying?” Mia asked.

“No, I—yes! I’m crying.” I suddenly burst into tears.

“Are you pregnant?” Joni demanded as she strode back into the living room.

I shook my head. “No. I swear, I’m just…fuck. I’m so happy.”

“Yeah,” Mia said dryly. “You lookreallyhappy…”

The room erupted into laughter, including me.

“Uh, Joni,” Darcy said, pointing to Joni’s chest.

Joni looked down. “Damn it. I’m lactating. Did you have to cry?”

“Welcome to my life story,” Mia muttered.

“The joys of motherhood. It’s like I can perform a magic trick or something.” Joni sighed and sat down.

I dried my cheeks. “Sorry. I’ll try not to cry anymore.”

“I’ll try not to lactate, but no promises,” Joni remarked.

“You just gave birth. I’m pretty sure you get a pass,” Doc said.

“So why the tears?” Mia asked. “I mean, I know you’re happy, but…”

“Everything is so perfect. I was just overwhelmed by it all.”

“You sure you’re not knocked up?” Darcy asked.

“I’m sure.” I bit my lip. “I did just go off my birth control, though…”

“No shit.” Mia’s eyes widened. “You and Duke are trying already?”

“We’re not trying outright, but also not staying on birth control,” I explained. “Just a, let’s-see-what-happens sort of thing. Let nature take its course and be happy if it happens.”

“Wow,” Doc murmured.

“What about you?” Mia asked, throwing a look at Doc.

“What about me?” Doc demanded.

“You’re about to leave on your non-honeymoon honeymoon to Scotland,” Darcy said. “Scotch is potent, that’s all I’m saying.”
