A surge of emotion hit me hard and fast.

“Acid, take Sailor outside. Let her get some air. We’ll be out in a minute,” Duke commanded.

Sailor looked at me.

“They’re Blue Angels. You’ve heard of them?” I asked.

She shook her head in negation.

“You’ll be safe with them. I promise.”

“Okay,” she whispered.

Acid handed the flashlight to Duke and then held out a hand to Sailor. She took it, and he ushered her out of the compartment toward the back rolling door of the truck.

Duke stood up and reached for me.

“Where are we?” I asked.

“Just outside Laredo.”

“Laredo,” I murmured. “They were taking us to Mexico, weren’t they?”

“Yes.”

He turned around and led me through a small doorway in the truck, past large furniture, and rolled up carpets in clear plastic wrapping.

“This looks professional,” I stated.

Duke paused for a moment and then said, “It is. This isn’t the first truck we’ve found.”

Bile churned in my stomach. “There have been more?”

“Yes.”

“A lot more?”

“Just…more.”

We stepped out into the night. It was evening and the sky was full of stars. The air was stagnant but not overly hot. I thought about being in the truck during the height of summer. How many people died in trucks like these? No ventilation, no air-conditioning…

Duke pulled me into his arms and I felt him shudder. He squeezed me so tight it felt like he was going to break me.

“Thought I lost you.”

My body began to shake, as if there was no longer any capacity for adrenaline to power me. “How did you find us?”

He pulled back and stared at me like something was wrong.

“What is it?” I asked.

“You might not like the answer.”

“You rescued me,” I reminded him. “I don’t care what you did.”

“I put a tracker in your car,” he said with a slight smile. “Waverly called me just a few minutes after you failed to show up at her school. She knew something was wrong because you’re always on time or early, and if you’re not going to be, you call. You didn’t call this time. I checked the tracker and saw where your car was. Junk yard outside of town. Savage and I drove there and found the guys who’d taken you. It took a bit of convincing for them to give us the details of the route the truck was on, but they finally came around.”

I raised my brows. “Theycame around?”
