Duke scratched his jaw. “One of them is dead. It got ugly as soon as they saw us. Savage got hold of the other one. He’s still with him now.”

“Oh.” I pressed my hand to his chest directly over his heart. He covered my hand with his.

“Give me a second.” He took out his cell. “Gotta call Savage and let him know we found you. I’d hate to be the asshole he’s with right now.” He dialed Savage. “Hey. Yeah, we’ve got her. Okay, hang on…” Duke handed me the phone.

“Hey,” I said.

“You’re okay?” Savage asked, his voice sounding raspy.

“Yeah, I’m okay.”

He let out a huge sigh of relief. “Put Duke back on.”

I gave the cell to Duke.

Savage said something on the other end and Duke replied, “Yeah, give me a minute to talk to Prez.”

He took my hand and we walked over to the other side of the truck. Illuminated by the headlights were two men face down in the ditch next to the road. The truck was angled sharply and had a blown tire, and I realized one of the guys had shot the tire out. We were on a long, remote stretch of Texas highway, and all was quiet.

I looked at the men, their hands bound behind their backs.

Acid had a pistol trained on one of them and Boxer had a shotgun in hand.

“Where’s Sailor?” I asked.

“In the cab of our van on the other side of the truck,” Colt said, not taking his eyes off the men. “Why don’t you join her.”

“Are they going to—”

“No more questions,” Colt said, glancing away from the men on the ground and striding toward me. “We’ll talk later. Go.Now.”

I did as he commanded. As I walked to the van, I heard Duke say, “I have Savage on the phone.”

I looked over my shoulder and watched as Duke handed his cell to Colt.

Colt took it and put it to his ear. “Yeah.” He paused. “Take care of it.”

The president of the Blue Angels hung up the phone and handed it back to Duke. Colt turned his attention to me, scrutinizing me as I walked away, unable to take my eyes off him.

The look on his face told me more than a thousand words could have.

There wouldn’t be any mercy. Not tonight.

Boxer had yet to say a word. The normally good-humored biker looked untamed, an all-consuming rage brewing within him, like it was taking all his willpower not to pull the trigger on the massive shotgun he held.

I finally looked away and rounded the corner of the truck and then climbed into the front seat of the van next to Sailor. No sooner had I slammed the door shut than two gunshots rang out through the night.

It was done.

Sailor’s eyes were wide and her lips were pinched with exhaustion and terror. Her pants were still wet. She tried to tug down her shirt to cover it, but it was no use.

“It’s okay,” I said and looked her straight in the eyes. “You’re safe now, but I need something from you—”

Sailor leaned her head against my shoulder. “I won’t say a word. I swear on my life I won’t say a word. I just wanna go home.”

“You understand how big a deal this—”

“I get it. I swear to you, not a word.” She paused and then said, “You’re lucky to have Duke. He saved our lives tonight.”
