Waverly reached into the bag and pulled out the lemon drops. “He bought you your favorite candy.”

“Yep.”

She sighed, all dreamy. “You want to sit and gush about our boyfriends?”

“You’ll gush with me?” I asked in surprise.

“Well, yeah, I’ve wanted to gush for a while, but there really hasn’t been a lot of time. What with everything falling apart.”

“Well, it’s not falling apart now,” I said. “I think we’ve rounded a corner.”

“God, I hope so. It’s exhausting being a delinquent.” She grinned and I burst out laughing.

“You, kid, are my absolute favorite.”

“Come on!” Waverly moaned. “You’re taking forever to get ready!”

“Hold your horses, punk,” I called back. I swiped my lips with clear gloss, fingered my hair-sprayed waves, and then left the bathroom.

Waverly was tapping her Doc Marten clad foot impatiently, her hands on her hips. But when she saw me, she grinned. “You look hot.”

“Thanks.”

“Trying to impress Duke?”

I pointed a finger at her. “Remember what I said.”

“My lips are sealed.” She mimed zipping her mouth shut and throwing away the key.

“Well, we survived this week. Let’s go eat our weight in hot dogs.”

“You said it,” she quipped. “Though, honestly, it went by pretty fast, didn’t it?”

“For you, maybe.” I locked up the house and then tossed her the keys. “You’re driving.”

“Am I designated driver tonight?” she asked. “I can be if you want.”

“There’s being a bad influence, and then there’s being a bad influence,” I said. “Though I guess I should be the one worried aboutyourinfluence on me.”

“Never gonna let me live it down, are you?” she asked as she opened the driver’s side door.

“Probably not.” I buckled myself in. “How do Dylan’s parents feel about you?”

“It’s just his mom,” she said. “And she works all the time.”

“Ergo she has no idea that you’re corrupting her son.”

“There’s no corrupting going on. More like, he’s my clean-up crew when I mess up.” She pulled away from the curb. “Jessica’s parents won’t let her hang out with me, even when my suspension is over. Not that I blame them, but still.”

“Give it time,” I suggested. “And show them you’re not going to drag their daughter into trouble anymore.”

“No promises.” She threw me a grin, but it was forced.

Though she was teasing and trying for levity, I could tell being separated from her best friend weighed heavily on her.

It was good we were going to the clubhouse where she could be distracted by food and conversation.

“You’re not going to be bored?” I asked.
