“Why would I be bored?”

“Because there won’t be anyone there your age,” I said.

“There’s no one my age at Charlie’s, and I’m never bored there.”

“Good point.”

“I’ll be fine.”

She spoke with an assurance that was new. She’d always been closed off, and rarely did she like being around people she didn’t know well.

“Speaking of fine,” she said, “make sure you act completely normal around Duke.”

“Completely normal? What does that even mean?”

“I mean, if you want to keep this a secret, you can’t stare at him with that look you had when you came home, even when you think no one is watching. Someone’s always watching.”

“You speak from experience, do you?” I asked with a laugh.

“Yep.” She grinned. “Jessica told me how Dylan watched me when he thought no one was looking.”

“So what you’re really saying is the best friend is the one who’s watching.”

“Yep. And even though Savage is kind of oblivious, he’s not stupid. So just… act normal.”

“Thanks for the tip,” I drawled.

“It’s what I’m here for.” She grinned.

Crow and South Paw were guarding the gate of the clubhouse and waved us through. Waverly turned into the gravel parking lot and her breath hitched.

“You okay?” I asked her as she cut the engine.

“Um. That’s Dylan’s bike,” she said, pointing to a motorcycle.

“Really?”

She nodded. “Did they—oh God, Savage wasn’t kidding.”

“Wasn’t kidding about what?” I demanded.

“The other day, he said he was going to invite Dylan to the barbecue so he and the other guys could grill him.”

I sniggered. “Ha, no pun intended.”

“Shut up.”

“Maybe they just want to roast him?”

“Willa!” she snapped.

“Sorry, doll,” I said with a wide grin. “This is just the way they are.”

“Great,” she muttered.

“He didn’t tell you he was coming?”

She shook her head. “No, and I’m going to give him hell about it.”
