“Maybe he thought you’d bail if you knew he was invited.”

“Yeah, maybe.”

“Besides, I think you should cut him some slack. Dylan is clearly in love with you if he’s willing to brave a night with bikers who are insanely protective of you.”

A smile blossomed across her face. “You think he’s in love with me?”

I tugged on the end of her ponytail. “You idiot.”

She laughed. “Come on, let’s go save my boyfriend from Savage being Savage.”

“What about Duke?” I asked. “You don’t think he’s going to give Dylan hell?”

“Nah, Duke will be too busy staring at your ass to give Dylan hell.”

We climbed out of the car and headed up to the clubhouse steps. When we stepped inside, we saw a cluster of people busy in the kitchen. Darcy was covering a plate of hamburger patties while Mia cut open packages of bratwurst and hot dogs.

“Yes! You guys are here!” Mia exclaimed. “Do me a huge favor. Grab something from the kitchen and take it outside. The guys have already fired up the grill, the coolers are full of drinks, and for the love of God, whatever you do, don’t let the dogs inside. Monk got into a plate of raw burgers already.”

“Hello,” Darcy said, her eyes twinkling. “Welcome to crazy town. Hope you enjoy your stay.”

“I didn’t bring my passport,” Waverly quipped.

Darcy laughed. “Will you check on Lily? If I know her, she’s already lied to Boxer, Zip,andher father about how many cookies she’s had. I don’t want her spoiling her dinner.”

“Will do.” She saluted as she grabbed a condiment carrier in one hand and a fruit platter in another.

“There’s also a very cute boy here who claims to be your boyfriend,” Mia said, her smile widening.

“I better get out there then,” Waverly stated. “Dylan needs reinforcements.” She headed off in the direction of the back yard.

“Your sister is a life saver,” Darcy said. “I swear she’s the only one who can wrangle Lily.”

“Waverly told me you’re losing your babysitter to college next year.”

“Yep.” Darcy nodded. “Here, Mia. Throw them on this cookie sheet.”

Mia dumped the bratwurst onto the cookie sheet and then arranged them so they fit neatly side by side. “There’s always so much leftover food that we don’t have to cook for a few days,” she said. “It makes life easy for a while.”

“Waverly’s taking a CPR class,” I said. “So when she sits for Cam and Lily, she’s fully prepared for anything that may happen.”

“God, what a good kid,” Darcy said. “A true gem. As far as I’m concerned, the minute Waverly has her license, we’ll phase out Audrey.”

“You think my sister’s a good kid?” I asked in surprise.

“Well, yeah.” Darcy cocked her head to the side. “Oh, you mean because of the suspension.”

I shrugged. “It’s the second suspension.”

“We heard about why she got suspended,” Darcy said. “As far as I’m concerned, that principal is a shit bag extraordinaire.”

“Not so much the suspension as the lying to her older sister about going to a party,” I said.

“She’s a teenager. That’s what they do,” Darcy said.

“Let’s get out there,” Mia said. “I’m dying to see Waverly around her boyfriend.”

The three of us grabbed the trays of food and headed to the back yard. Silas and Cam were kicking a soccer ball back and forth as two dogs lounged in the grass away from the commotion. Lily was sitting on Boxer’s shoulders, munching on what looked like the remains of a cookie.
