“Three, two, one,” Darcy chanted.

The moment Darcy saidone, Brooklyn burst into tears, brushed past Slash, and went into the clubhouse.

“What the hell was that about?” I asked in confusion.

“New batch of second trimester hormones,” Joni said with a sigh. “I know it well.”

Slash set his pastry box next to the one Brooklyn had left and then went inside after his wife.

“They’ll be back in like—” Joni looked at Darcy and then Allison “—what? Twenty minutes?”

“I’d say closer to thirty,” Allison projected.

“Care to make it interesting?” Darcy asked.

“Fifty bucks,” Joni said. “I think it’ll be twenty minutes.”

“I guess thirty,” Allison said.

“Twenty-eight minutes.” Darcy looked at her watch. “And the time starts now.”

“Twenty-eight minutes?” I repeated. “That’s oddly specific.”

“What’s your bet?” Joni asked me.

“I don’t have fifty bucks to lose,” I said wryly. “But I’m going with twenty-two minutes.”

Mia returned to the party, carting a newly diapered baby. She took a seat next to Joni on the patio couch and got comfortable.

“Damn, I forgot to get a drink.” Mia made a motion to get up.

I waved her down. “I’ll get it for you.”

Mia smiled. “Angel. Sparkling water, please.”

“Sure. Anyone else need anything?”

Allison looked up from her spot on the blanket next to her son who’d fallen asleep with his bottom in the air. “Same for me, please.”

Joni and Darcy shook their heads and then I went off to get drinks. I was bent over at a cooler when I heard, “You had to wear those jeans, didn’t you?”

I slowly stood up and looked at Duke over my shoulder. “It’s possible that I might’ve thought a minute or two about what they’d do to you if I wore them…”

His dark eyes scanned my face. “You’re not wearing lipstick.”

“No, I’m not. Lipstick smears.”

“Jesus,” he muttered. “You’re lethal.”

I grinned. “So, do you have a plan for how the hell we can sneak away for a few minutes and not get caught?”

“When the sun sets, and we light the bonfire.” He took a step toward me and dipped his head. His voice quieted when he said, “Watch for me. You’ll know when I can’t wait any longer.”

Desire flickered in my belly.

“Willa!” Waverly called.

I reluctantly pulled my gaze away from Duke to peer at my sister. “Yeah?”
