“Because you’re cute, and she’ll feel guilty for not being here if she hears your voice. I want her at the party. You’re up.”

Lily nodded. “You’re right. I am cute.”

“You have no idea. Now, let’s see what you can do,” Boxer said, pointing to the phone.

Lily touched the screen and then put the cell to her ear. “Aunt Doc, its Lily Burger. Listen, Uncle Boxer misses you and he wants you to come to the party, so you should come to the party.” She paused a second and nodded. “K, see you soon.”

She hung up the phone and handed it back to Boxer. “Here ya go.”

“That was fast,” Boxer said.

“She had to go.” She grabbed Boxer’s fingers and dragged him toward the table of food. “You owe me another cookie.”

Darcy hastily looked at Brooklyn.

Brooklyn raised her brows. “I’ve made my peace with the fact that Lily shows no allegiance when it comes to baked goods.”

“She called Linden Aunt Doc,” Joni said. Her lip started to wobble and then she burst into tears. “So damn cute!”

“Zip!” Darcy called out. “Your wife needs you.” She looked at her watch. “Ladies, place your bets.”

Chapter17

“Silas found his new idol,”Mia said, looking fondly at her son as he kicked the soccer ball around with Cam and Dylan.

“I think it’s safe to say that Dylan has the Blue Angels stamp of approval,” Darcy said.

“Don’t tell Waverly that,” I quipped. “I think she likes to be a rebel. She might break up with him just to prove a point. And he’s a good influence on her. We need that.”

“Finally!” Boxer yelled.

A slender blonde with a pixie cut strode up to him and placed a hand on his chest. “You have no patience.”

Monk—Doc and Boxer’s dog—ran up to greet her. After Doc kissed Boxer, she bent down and gave her yellow lab a vigorous rub. The fur baby rolled over onto his back and showed off his belly.

“Hey, girl,” Mia called out to her.

“Hey.” Doc smiled and took Boxer’s hand, bringing him with her toward us.

“You ready to tell them?” Boxer asked her.

She peered up at him with blue eyes. “Might want to cover your ears. They’re going to squeal.”

“Oh my God,” Joni breathed. “You’re pregnant!”

Doc snorted. “No.”

“Rats,” Joni muttered.

“We’ve set a wedding date,” Doc said, tugging on Joni’s ponytail.

“Yeah, yeah, you’ve been talking about it for months. I’ll believe it when I see it,” Joni teased.

“Two weeks from today,” Doc said. “Believe it.”

“No.” Joni frowned. “You’re not serious.”

“As a heart attack,” Doc said.
