He let out a low chuckle.

“It’s not funny!”

“You’re right. It’s fucking hilarious.”

“You can’t see me right now, but I’m glaring at you.”

“I know you are.”

I sighed. “You might get your way after all.”

“What’s my way?”

“The way where everyone knows about us.”

“There will be hell to pay if Savage is the last one to find out. We should probably tell him before any more people find out, don’t you think?”

“Yeah.” I sighed. “Where are you now?”

“In Odessa. In a dank motel room where the air can’t keep up with the humidity so everything is damp and musty smelling. The air, my clothes, my skin.”

“You sharing a room with Savage?”

“Yeah. He went out to grab us food from the local diner and it gave me time to call. Ah, key in the door, he’s back. Hey, asshole, say hi to Willa and tell her you made it here in one piece.”

“I made it here in one piece,” Savage called.

I smiled. “Glad to hear you guys are good. Well, I’ll let you enjoy your dinner.”

“Thanks, I will.”

He hung up and I set my phone aside.

At some point, Savage would find out. It was the law of cascading failures. First one person, then another, then before you knew it, your entire secret wasn’t a secret anymore. He deserved to know, and he deserved to hear it from Duke and me, not anyone else.

The bedroom door opened and Waverly came out into the living room, rubbing her eyes.

“Did I wake you?” I asked her.

She shook her head. “Couldn’t really sleep. Tossed and turned for a while.”

“We should return that mattress. Wasn’t it a money back guarantee if you didn’t fall asleep in five minutes?”

“Oh, I fell asleep, I just didn’t stay asleep. Why are you still up?”

“I wanted to talk to Duke. And Savage,” I added.

She went to the faucet and filled up a glass of water. “They make it to Odessa okay?”

“Yeah. They’re fine.”

“You miss him, don’t you?”

“Would you tease me if I said yes?”

“Yeah, I’ll tease you.” She grinned and then drank her water.

I did miss him. And it wasn’t like he hadn’t gone out of town for a few days for club business before. But it was different now.
