Rummaging through the dog’s toybox, she hisses. “You little shit!”

Whimpering, Diogi burrows deeper beneath my arm and then pops his head out, watching as she balances and slips her foot into the heel. Standing upright, she tugs at the hem of her short dress and walks over. She makes an angry face at the dog and then plants a fat kiss on his nose. “Don’t take my shoes!”

I reach for the remote and turn on Netflix, clicking until I see my celebrity crush.

“Really, Mom? White Collar again?”

I laugh. “Why not? Matt Bomer is hot!”

“And gay!”

“His husband is a lucky guy.”

“Speaking of guys… did you hear that Billy’s back?”

“Ugh, don’t start, Ky.” I point the remote toward my mouth and pretend to gag.

With her hands on her hips, she stands there looking down at me. “Why not? When was the last time you went on a date?”

I lie. “I don’t know.”

“I do! It’s been over a year. The last guy you dated was that married asshole named Blake.”

“Language!”

“I didn’t know he was married until his wife showed up at the restaurant.”

“You should come out with us.”

I laugh darkly. “Oh, yeah. Because going to a club with your mom is the cool thing to do.”

“Mom! You’re young and sexy as fuck.”

“Hey, knock it off!” I shriek. I don’t care that she’s an adult, I don’t like her swearing. It’s vulgar and crass and unnecessary.

She sticks out her tongue. “Fine, stay home, old lady! But we’re going out for your birthday. I won’t take no for an answer.” Leaning down, she kisses my cheek and rubs Diogi’s head.

“Be safe!”

“Always am,” she says as she walks through the front door of our split-level Ranch.

A minute later, my phone rings.

“Hey, Mom!”

“Hi, Vannie. What’re you doing?” I grimace at my childhood nickname that only she and my grandmother use.

“Not much.”

“Watching white Collar again?”

“Did Kylie just call you?” I ask, unable to hide the exasperation in my voice.

“Yes, but she’s worried about you. All you do is work and watch tv.”

“So what! I’m happy with the way things are.”

“Are you really?”
