We speak at the same time and then insist the other continue.

“Thank you for tonight. You didn’t have to do what you did, but I’m not going to lie and say that I’m not happy you kicked his ass!”

“I can skip the gym tomorrow.”

My belly flips at the sound of his light laughter and beautiful smile. I lift a brow. “You can probably afford to skip the gym for a few days. You’rejacked. No pun intended.”

He places his swollen-knuckled hand on his chest coyly. “Are you hitting on me?”

“Maybe,” I answer honestly. I don’t know if my age is making me more confident. For all I know, it could be from all that online flirting. I shiver at the idea that I was remotely interested in that asshole.

“Are we still on for dinner tomorrow?”

“Maybe.” I wink. “I’ll call you.”

“Is that code for no?”

I laugh. “No. It’s been a crazy night. I want to shower and crawl into bed.”

“Is that an invitation?”

“Goodnight, Jack.” I shove him away by his chest then lose my footing when he doesn’t budge. He holds me close. I look up and feel my heart beat faster. I’m so affected by this man and I’m not sure getting involved with him is a good idea. I don’t have the best track record when it comes to men.

“You look a little…” he says, narrowing his eyes as smirk tugs at the corner of his mouth. “Flustered.”

Panic rises when I realize I’ve been caught.

“Let me drive you home.”

“You’ve done enough tonight. My parents can drop us off.”

“They left already. Your mother was pretty upset.”

He’s not going to give up easily.

“I’ve got to take care of something. Meet you over there.” He motions to the same location where I’m meeting Kylie.

“Sure.”

He walks across the room and speaks to the woman who’s monitoring the rescue dogs. Leaning over the pen, he pets the dogs before giving more attention to a larger one. The woman drops to a squat, hugging the same dogs before she looks at Jack with a nod and a smile.

They seem to share a moment and jealousy again rears its ugly head. I have no reason for the inexplicable feelings raging in me.

As he walks away, he turns back and blows a kiss in her direction. What the hell! Who the hell is this woman and why is he smiling at her and blowing her kisses?

I pivot and walk over to meet Kylie. Confusion mars my face when I realize she’s standing beside my parents. “Hey, I thought you left already.”

My parents exchange a quick look, one that suggests they’re planning and scheming. “We were, but your mom…she forgot something.”

Her eyes widen like a deer in headlights.

I twist my lips and scoff. “Likely story.”

My father glances over my shoulder and then tells my mother it’s time to go. I follow his line of sight and see Jack walking over.

“Are you guys serious right now?” I huff, remaining stiff when my dad hugs me.

“Have fun tonight.”
