“Fine, then I’ll move out.”

As if she’d stabbed me deep in the heart, I gasp. “You wouldn’t.”

Sadness fills her face as she walks over and hugs me. “Mom, I can’t stay here forever. Someday I’m going to have to leave. This is exactly why you need to find someone.”

“I’m sorry,” I whisper, squeezing my girl tighter. “Do you know how much I love you? I would do everything in my power to protect you.”

I feel her body shake with amusement. “I don’t need protecting. You raised me to be strong and independent just like you.”

Ping!

“Fine,” I acquiesce. “But if someone ever breaks your heart, I’ll rip them to shreds with-”

“Your bare hands…I know.”

I release her just as another message alert replaces seconds of silence.

Kylie and I reach for our phones at the same time, but I wait until she’s out of the kitchen before opening the app. There’s a voice recording, but the sound quality is horrible.

DanDad007: Hey. Looks like we’ve been matched. I’ll be around later if you want to meet up. Uh, have a nice day.

His voice is deep and raspy as if he hadn’t slept a wink, but then again, it could be the app.

DanDad007: I’m sorry. That message was pathetic. This online dating is new and I’m not sure how I feel about it yet. It’s awkward and forced. I’d much rather meet in person. Hit me up if you want to grab a drink.

I click on the third recording.

DanDad007: Hit me up? What the hell! I won’t be surprised if you block me after this. I would block me, too. I hate texting. It takes too long to say what I want to say. I’m a straight shooter.

Chuckling at his messages, I walk to my room and think of a witty response. Wait, what?! Why would I even respond? After all, this is the same man who’s been messaging my daughter!

Instead of replying, I hop in the shower and get ready for work. I’ve got a few clients coming in and then I’m closing at noon.

“Ky, I’ll see you later!” I shout as I step out into the cold and strap Diogi into his harness.

I hear several morePings!during the drive, but I ignore them. This guy must be desperate or a player. I wonder how many other women he’s chatting with.

When I get to the salon, I check the app. There’s a message fromLongDongRick9that reads,“Want this?”It’s accompanied by a picture of his long but thin penis. Ugh! Immediate block! Another message is from a person wearing a black mask.SexSlave69: “Let’s play.”Oh, God! What have I gotten myself into?

DanDad007 left yet another message, introducing himself as Tre.

Hello, Tre. I’m Kylie’s mother!

When my nine o’clock is a no-show, I reopen the app and decide to reply while I restock the product shelf and clean the sinks.

Stella214: As you can see, I haven’t blocked you yet, although I was thiiiiiis close so don’t press your luck. I won’t be on here long. I’m getting messages from weird people. The present company...yet to be determined.

Circles dance on the screen as he replies quickly.

DanDad007: Funny! Want to compare notes? I don’t like to mess around. I work hard and play harder. On days off, I’m usually hiking with my dog. In fact, he needs a bath.

Stella214: You’re a dog dad! Love it! I must admit, I’m a crazy dog mom. Diogi is my whole world. I would literally die for him. Put some of your cologne on him.

DanDad007: Haha. I don’t wear cologne. That’s for women. I got him after my last deployment. He was the ring bearer at my sister’s wedding last year. How about Diogi? Please don’t tell me he’s a little poodle that you dress up. That’s just wrong. Interesting name by the way.

A picture of his dog wearing a bowtie appears on my screen.

Stella214: LOL! He’d run back to the shelter if I tried to clothe him. I can’t take credit for his name, but it suits him. Which branch?
