From the moment Alex and I had officially gotten back together, we were worse than college kids—we were like horny teenagers, unable to keep our hands off each other. It was the most and the best sex of my life, and Alex was more than happy to keep up that standard.

I pulled on a pair of leggings and one of Alex’s hoodies, and we headed downstairs to the living room and what felt like an endless stack of boxes that included a recent delivery from one of the nicest furniture stores on the Upper East Side. Things had really changed since college.

“I’ll start loading up the shelves,” I said. “Will you do the pillows?”

Alex nodded and moved to our new couch, where a pile of pillows and pillow covers sat, ready to be assembled.

I opened the first box, loaded with pictures old and new, and began unwrapping the frames from their protective newspaper casings.

“You up for pizza tonight?” Alex asked. “I don’t think we can get to the grocery store before closing anyway.”

“Yes,” I said, placing an unwrapped frame on the shelf and moving to the next. “You promised we could order from that place that wood-fires everything.”

Alex nodded. “You’re going to love it.”

I finished unwrapping another frame, holding up the newspaper as a photo caught my eye: Leah Grey, standing side by side with a tall, dark, handsome man, the headline reading,White Wedding for Leah Grey. A story of love lost, then found again.

I smiled, flipping the page over and holding it up for Alex.

“Did you see this?”

He looked up from the pillow he was struggling to get into its cover and smiled. “Yeah. The guy is her high school sweetheart. She tracked him down a little after we broke up. I’m really happy for her.”

“Me, too. We should send a gift.”

Alex nodded. “Absolutely. After everything she did, keeping me on when she could have just as easily fired me—it’s the least we can do.”

Leah had been extremely gracious where Alex’s work was concerned. Recognizing that his firm was still the best for the job, she didn’t terminate their contract, although she did assign one of her VPs to work with him going forward.

“Have you talked to Liam?” Alex asked.

“No,” I said, a flicker of regret sparking in my chest. “Not since I picked up my stuff from his apartment.” I put the newspaper down and moved to the next frame. “I don’t really see us connecting again. There’s no reason for us to talk like there is for you and Leah, but last I heard, he started dating someone new—a lawyer. Probably a really good match for him.”

I hadn’t fully let myself off the hook for how I’d handled things with Liam, but when some of my old colleagues from Grey Industries mentioned he had started seeing someone, I felt more than a little relieved. After everything, I wanted him to find someone who loved him as much as he had loved me—as much as Alex and I, and apparently, Leah and her fiancé loved each other. Liam deserved that.

Before he could respond, Alex’s phone rang. He pulled it from his pocket and smiled before answering the call on speakerphone.

“Hey, Sabrina. Did you dial my number by mistake?”

“No,” my best friend said, “your girlfriend isn’t answering her phone.”

Shit.I glanced around, trying to remember where I’d left my phone. “Sorry, S,” I called out. “I don’t know where I put it.”

“It’s probably upstairs with your pants,” Alex said with a smirk.

“Uh, I didn’t need to hear that,” Sabrina said. “And if I’m interrupting naked fun, why did you pick up the phone?”

“You’re not interrupting, and neither of us is naked,” I insisted. Alex walked over and handed his phone to me. I took it off speaker and continued. “So, what’s up? Did you figure out when you’re coming to New York?”

“I did. How’s two weekends from now?”

I squealed. “Seriously? That’s amazing. You’re not booking a hotel, okay? You’re staying here. Promise?”

“I promise,” Sabrina said. “I gotta go. I’m booking my flight as we speak. Can’t wait to see you.”

“You, too.”

I hung up as Alex finished the last of the pillows and joined me.
