“An eight… do they have shoes?”

“Yeah, can you walk in platform heels?”

“I have no idea.”

“They aren’t that bad… here, try these.”

They looked like the fancy platform heels she’d tried on at the mall yesterday before their infamous dinner that started this all. Slipping on the shoes, she laughed and started to get a little nervous… only to have them call her name.

“Emily Masden? We’re ready for… Ohhhh! Hello?! I love it!” the attendant said happily, clapping her hands in delight. “This is going to be great! Do you mind if I stay and take photos for our website?”

“No – can you take some with my cell phone, too?”

“Absolutely!”

“Here, follow me down this hallway,” the attendant offered. “There’s a little more ceiling clearance and… Oh, I love this so much…”

Emily’s heart was hammering in her chest as she walked slowly down the hallway behind her, realizing she might have made a mistake regarding her choice of costumes… only to enter the ‘sanctuary’ that was covered in wood paneling, with a pulpit waiting for the two of them.

John was standing there in a dark blue seventies costume suit with massive lapels… and his mouth fell open the moment she walked in.

He immediately turned to the magistrate and glared at him.

“Don’t youdarelook at my wife…” John growled possessively, walking over and taking her hand to help her to the pulpit. His eyes were wide with appreciation and his mouth worked several times before he stammered. “My g-goodness, Em… y-you are b-breathtaking.”

“I thought maybe this would be fun and exciting?”

“This isperfect…” he said intensely.

“You don’t have a problem marrying a showgirl?”

“Not when she’s my every dream…” John said tenderly, causing Emily to melt openly as she gazed at him, standing almost eye-to-eye with him because of the high heels.

“Shall we begin?”

Both Emily and John didn’t look away from each other as they spoke in unison, linking hands, and lost in each other’s eyes.

“Yes.”

“Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to witness these vows between John Christopher Masden and Emily Matilda Marks Masden…”

“Emily,” John interrupted, speaking his vows softly to her, and ignoring the magistrate who was still talking over them. It was like the words were pouring from him, unheeded, like a flood he couldn’t stop or hold back. “The moment I met your eyes in the hallway at Hot Cakes’ wedding, I knew there was something about you. I was so confused, so taken aback, and so startled that I was fighting the attraction so hard… but then you smiled at me – and I was a goner.”

John let out a shaky sigh and she felt his hands trembling in hers, knowing that these words were coming straight from his heart.

“I’ve never met someone that was so perfect for me, accepted me as I am, and tries so hard to make me feel special… and I am humbled in the way you look at me,” he said shyly, gazing at her, his green eyes shining with emotion.

“I feel like I could take over the world, feel like everything is going to be okay just looking in your eyes, and you give me such peace in my soul that it scares me sometimes.”

“Really?” Emily whispered, stunned.

“What we have is so beautiful, so perfect, and so unexpected, that I keep anticipating something to go wrong with our miracle… but maybe I’m finally just learning that marrying my best friend is the best decision I’ve ever done in my life… besides asking you out or getting you rip-roaring drunk,” he smiled tenderly as Emily laughed happily, blinking back tears.

“I’m so glad we got drunk, Emily… and I’m so glad we met.”

“Me too,” she whispered, unable to look away from the happiness and pride in his eyes – especially when they suddenly roamed over her before he wagged his eyebrows knowingly, causing her to laugh again.

“John, when you asked me out the first time, I was so stunned that this breathtakingly beautiful man with a smile that lights up the entire room was actually looking and talking to me.”
