“Better than the last two?”

“Yes. Erm. Definitely…different.”

He looked at her, unable to stop the lazy smile stretching across his face, unable to think of a single thing to say, given all the blood in his body was fruitlessly elsewhere.

What a waste of a goddamn stellar erection.

A car drove past, making Sophia jump. Then the car slowed, stopped, and reversed. “You people OK there?” asked a middle-aged man. “You’re not broken down?”

“We’re fine. Thank you,” said Sophia quickly.

“Yes, we’re fine,” said Jay, his eyes on Sophia, that smile he couldn’t quite wipe from his face still in place. “Just delivering the goods.”

The man nodded, a little confused, and drove off.

Chapter ten

Sophia

ThedayafterTheKiss—Sophia felt as though her life was now in two halves: before and after that moment—Jay sent her a text message:

Jay: What should I listen to, Clements? Give me a song.

Sophia smiled to herself where she sat in the conservatory reading. The light was cool and white outside, and she had a blanket on her curled-up knees, her Siamese cat on top. It jumped down with an affronted look as she shifted position to sit upright, grinning at her phone.

She scrolled through her music and sent Jay the link to a track.Nothin’ But a Good Timeby Poison. She felt it was fairly appropriate, given it was about a man whose partying was curtailed by lack of money.

Jay: Hah. I see what you did there. Nicely played, Clements.

And that was all, for that day, but the next day, while Sophia stretched and warmed down after her morning run, Jay texted her again.

Jay: Send me a song, Clements.

She did, biting her lip and smiling as she typed,Stay Clean,Motörhead.

Sophia: Did you go on your road trip?

Jay: No. I did as you said. I sent them to bed and packed them off in the morning with a flask of hot coffee.

Sophia: I’m glad. Though I’m sorry if I’m a killjoy.

Jay: Soph, I’d rather drink shandy with you than champagne with anyone else.

She stared at her phone, smiling, stretches forgotten. Something warm turned over in her chest. But she texted back:

Sophia: Is that one of those flirtatious statements you said you’d slip into conversation?

Jay: Hah.

Jay: Yes.

Jay: Good catch, Clements.

Sophia: See, I’m learning!

Jay: I’m a very good teacher.

Sophia: I’ll get you an apple.
