“Mr. Kourakos, there is a Malichi Galanis is here to see you.”

Putting the paperwork on my top of the desk, I tell her to send him in.”

The door opens with Malichi stepping in dressed in a suit and a fresh haircut.

“You wanted to see me, boss,” he says, looking straight forward.

“Have a seat, Malichi,” I instruct. “How’s your wound?”

After he sits in the empty chair next to Basil, he replies, “Its fine, sir. Thank you for having your private doctor stitch me up.”

“No problem,” I return before jumping right into it. “Look Malichi, I’m not one to keep shit from people.”

He nods, moving his eyes to Basil, then back to me.

I continue. “I’m not sure how you’re going to take this, but I reached out to my family, and they remembered who your father was.”

“Was?” he asks, puzzled.

“Yes, was. Apparently, he tried to get the other Captains to turn against my Uncle Sebastian, but things did not go as he planned. My Uncle found out what he was up to, and the other Captains sided with my uncle. I don’t need to tell you how it ended for him.”

I wait for his reaction with my hand gripping the pistol under my desk. I relax when Malichi shrugs his shoulders, “Then he got what he deserved. He was greedy, trying to take from the hand that fed him. Not like he was taking what he stole to make sure my mother and I ate at the end of the day. Thanks for telling me but it doesn’t change how I feel about him.”

“I just thought you should know,” I tell him.

“I appreciate that. Now, I can tell my mother so she can stop expecting him to show back up one day to try and do right by us. I’ve taken care of my family since I could walk the block. Knowing this doesn’t change a thing.”

Pulling the envelope from my top drawer, I lay it on my desk, then push it towards him.

“But it does, Malichi. This can never replace what you and your family went through but it’s to let you know we take care of our own. You don’t have to take it but give it to you mother and younger siblings.”

It takes him a few moments before he takes the envelope. “I’ll give it to my mother, and I’ll make sure to tell her that it came from the Kourakos family. Thank you.”

“You’re welcome,” I throw back, admiring the love he has for his family.

My cellphone starts to ring. Picking it up, I look at the screen. It’s one of my men who’s watching over the bookstore. Thinking that something is wrong, I quickly tap the answer button, then put it on speaker.

“What’s going on?” I immediately ask.

Basil slides to the end of his seat as Malichi looks on.

“I’m sorry to bother you sir, but I thought you would like to know that she’s opened the store,” he replies.

I know for a fact I told Deanna not to open the store until I was there. She is going to be the death of me.

“Just keep an eye on her. I’ll be there shortly,” I state, ending the call.

“Did you really think Dee was going to wait on you?” Basil teases, laughing.

Rising from my seat, I reply, “I did.” Coming from around the desk, I say, “Let’s go and Malichi you’re coming with us. You owe Deanna an apology.”

“Yes, sir.”

I laugh to myself as he swallows hard. Malichi’s probably hoping Deanna doesn’t knock the shit out of him again.

It doesn’t take us long to pull up to the bookstore. On the drive over, I felt kind of out of place because, I’m sitting on the second-row seat of Basil’s Yukon Denali while Malichi sits up front in the passenger seat. Usually, it’s just Basil and I but since I told Malichi to come with us, I gave him the front seat and not because I was being nice. Unless you are family, I don’t ride in vehicles with others sitting behind me. I’m not giving anyone the fucking opportunity to come at me from behind.

“Looks like she has some customers in there,” Basil observes as he kills the engine.
