“Olivia!” Elizabeth rushes across the yard to me. “I didn’t realize you were here.”
She wraps her arms around me. “Do you need help?” she whispers.
She doesn’t wait for my reply before pushing me behind her. “Peace, good to see you.”
Peace? Odd name for a peace officer. His eyes flash with pain. Huh. What’s the story there?
“Hi, Elizabeth.”
“Have you met my sister, Olivia?”
River chuckles as he saunters our way. “Obviously, they’ve met, Bessie.”
Bessie? Elizabeth hates the nickname Bessie. But she’s beaming up at her boyfriend as if he invented sliced cheese after he used it. Huh. Maybe Elizabeth has changed as well.
Elizabeth threads her arm through mine. “Shall we get a drink and go spy on Cassandra and Cedar?”
“Sounds good.” I do love to spy on people, especially my sisters.
I wave to Peace as I walk off with Elizabeth.
“You should stay away from him,” she says once we’re out of earshot.
“Why? Is he your man on the side?”
River growls and I giggle.
Elizabeth pokes her boyfriend. “She’s trying to rile you up. Don’t fall for it.”
He crosses his arms over his chest and grunts at me. Big talker this one.
“I meant stay away from him because he’s a cop.”
“Oh, I know he’s a cop.”
“You do? He’s not in uniform today.”
“Sister, I can smell a cop a mile away.”
I’m lying. I know he’s a cop because he pulled me over.
She sighs. “Please try to stay out of trouble.”
“I make no promises,” I sing as I head toward the bar.

Is everything set?
For the millionth time, we’re ready. Get your butt over here.
I blow out a breath after reading Elizabeth’s text. Everything’s set for Cedar’s surprise party. Now all I have to do is get the man there without him realizing something’s up. It’s a miracle I’ve managed to keep the party a secret until now. Secrets and Winter Falls do not get along.
