“My patient just canceled,” I spoke.

“Great. Shut the door and have a seat.” She gestured to the couch.

“Yeah. I think I’ll sit in the chair.” I smirked.

She laughed as she walked over and sat down on the couch.

“Conner told me what happened last night between you and Georgia. I want you to know that it’s very common these days for a professional woman to keep her maiden name, and it has absolutely nothing to do with you. Georgia loves you more than life, Jackson.”

“I know she does, and I told her this morning that I would respect any decision she makes.”

“Do you really mean that?” she asked.

“Do I have a choice?”

“I want you to tell me how it makes you feel.”

“Charlotte, I—”

“Tell me, Jackson.” Her tone was authoritative.

I inhaled a sharp breath. “It hurts. It really hurts.”

“Why does it hurt you so badly?”

“Because it makes me feel like she isn’t all in.”

“But you know deep down that isn’t true,” Charlotte said.

“I can’t help the way I feel, Charlotte.”

“You know what I think? I think your past is starting to resurface.”

I looked away from her because she was right.

“By her not taking your last name, you’re scared she will leave one day, and it will be easy for her to do so. Am I right?”

“Yeah, Charlotte. You’re right,” I spoke with irritation. “It makes me question her belief if we’ll last as a couple.”

“Have you told her that?” she asked.

“It’s impossible to talk to her right now. She’s emotional, and she won’t listen.”

The door opened, and June rushed in.

“Jackson, Georgia needs you now!”

I jumped up from my chair and ran over to her practice.

“Where is she?” I asked her receptionist.

“Laying down in room five.”

I ran down the hall and into room five, where I saw her lying on the table and Emilia holding an ice pack on the back of her neck.

“What happened?” I ran over to Georgia.

“I’m fine, Jackson.”
