I hadn’t been feeling like myself for quite a while. With everything that Jackson was going through finding out about Christian, I didn’t need him worrying about me, hence why I never mentioned anything. He asked me about a month ago if I was okay, and I lied to him because I thought whatever was happening would disappear. Being a doctor, I should have known better.

“Hey.” Christian walked into the room. “Sorry. I was in surgery. How are you feeling?” He walked over and gripped my hand.

“A little better now,” I said.

“Good news is your electrocardiogram looks good.” He smiled. “What symptoms have you been having, and for how long?”

“It started with fatigue. Then it progressed to feeling anxious all the time.”

“You never told me that,” Jackson’s brows furrowed.

“I didn’t want you to worry. I’ve just felt off, Christian.”

“Okay. We’re going to start with some blood work first. I’m pretty confident there is nothing wrong with your heart.”

“How can you be so sure?” Jackson asked. “Maybe you should run some more tests like an echocardiogram.”

Christian chuckled. “Bro, relax.” He placed his hand on Jackson’s shoulder. “Pretend for a moment she’s one of your patients, not your fiancée. Let’s start with the bloodwork, and we’ll go from there. Charleigh, can you draw her and run them down to the lab? I want it done, stat.”

“Of course.” Charleigh smiled. “I’ll go grab the blood draw kit.”

Christian’s pager went off. “I have to go check on a post-op patient. I’ll be back in as soon as the results are back. Just relax.” He gave my hand a gentle squeeze. “You too.” He pointed at Jackson as he walked out of the room.

Charleigh walked back in and drew my blood.

“I’m going to run these down to the lab. Hopefully, we can get you out of here in no time.” A smile crossed her lips.

Jackson sat on the edge of the bed and took hold of my hand.

“I knew something was off with you. I even asked you about it, and you told me you were fine.”

“I didn’t want you to worry. You had enough on your plate.”

“I will always worry about you, no matter what. And you will always come first, babe. You know that.” He brought my hand up to his lips.

“I’m sorry, Jackson. I was hoping it would pass.”

“You’re a doctor. You know better than that.” A smirk crossed his lips.

“I know. But we doctors always make the worst patients.”

“That is true.” He chuckled.

“Listen. Go back to the medical center. I’m fine. You have patients who need you.”

“You don’t need me?” His brow arched.

“Of course, I need you. I always need you.”

“Then stop talking nonsense. I’m not going anywhere.” He leaned in and kissed my lips.

A couple of hours passed, and Christian walked into the room.

“Your test results are back. The good news is you’re not dying.” He smirked. “The bad news is your thyroid levels are way out of whack.”

“Hyperthyroidism?” I asked.

“Yep.”
