“They’re going to be pissed off anyway. That’s how we know we’re doing a good job.”

Meghan shut the laptop and turned, so she was facing me directly, her green eyes filled with irritation. “Do you always have to undermine everything? This isn’t a joke.”

“Do you always have to take everything so seriously?”

“At least one of us does.” Meghan reached for the laptop and stood up. She studied my face for a few seconds before tossing her dark hair over her shoulders. “I think it’s better if we talk about this with the team later, otherwise we’re not going to get anywhere.”

Having a buffer between us was a good idea.

Especially because of how much effort it took me to behave around her.

I had no idea being so close to her would prove to be so challenging.

Meghan was testing my self-control, and I couldn’t tell if I liked it or hated it.

She squeezed herself past me, so I was at eye level with her ass. I admired the firm and smooth shape of it until she got out and went to sit next to Rachel, who had a pillow resting against the window and was fast asleep. I picked up my drink, stretched my legs out in front of me and reached for her book.

Meghan returned and held her hand out to me. “I want my book back.”

“I knew you wouldn’t be able to resist.” I held out to her, and her fingers brushed against mine, sending a jolt of electricity racing up my spine. “Feel free to use the room in the back, if you want to act out any of the scenes in here.” I smirked.

Meghan gave me a withering look before she took her book and stalked back to her seat. I watched the sway of her hips as she did, my cock tightening against my jeans. Then I crossed one ankle over the other, sunk lower in my seat and squeezed my eyes shut. The warm feeling in the center of my stomach vanished when the plane landed, and I was jolted out of my seat.

One by one, everyone got up and filled the aisle until only Meghan and I were left. As they inched forward, leaving the two of us in the back. She held her cat carrier up to her chest and was murmuring into it. I followed behind her. The smell and feel of her pressed against me as we walked down the aisle stayed with me.

Outside, a limo was waiting for us on the runway.

As soon as we joined the rest of the group, Meghan put as much distance between us as possible, sitting on the opposite side of the limo and fussing over her cat. Rachel, Jessica and Donna sat next to her, cooing over the smug looking white-haired cat. I nursed another glass of whiskey and turned my attention to the window, and the trees and buildings, all blurring together outside. Once the car came to a stop, we all piled out and up the hotel stairs.

I strode across the carpeted floor and towards the main desk, underneath a large glittering chandelier. There, I made sure all of the rooms were in order before taking my key and spinning around to face everyone else. Meghan took a few steps back, lowered the cat carrier and gave me an annoyed look.

“Your rooms are ready. Freshen up, and we’ll meet back down here for dinner in an hour.”

In the elevator, Meghan and I rode up to our rooms together in silence.

I waited until she was in her own room, inconveniently located next to mine, before I pushed open my own door. Having her three feet away from my door was tempting, but I had many good reasons not to give into that temptation.

And all of them were good reasons that involved not dragging the two of us into a mess.

In the shower, I kept thinking of her, and it made all the blood rush to my groin until I got out and changed into my clothes. When I took the elevator down and made my way to the spacious, well-lit restaurant with crisp tablecloths and a view overlooking the water, Meghan was already there, in a short-sleeved dress, and a menu held up to her face.

Wordlessly, I took the seat opposite her and picked up my own menu.

Everyone else joined us shortly after.

After placing our orders, Meghan sat up straighter and cleared her throat. “Mr. Holt and I were discussing some of the blueprints for the resort, and we thought we would put it up for discussion tonight.”

I picked up my glass of whiskey and tilted it in their direction. “Don’t feel the need to agree with me because I pay your salaries.”

Nervous laughter rose through the air.

“Mr. Holt believes we should expand out rather than up, and buy out the whole beach,” Meghan said, with a quick look around the table. “However, I think it’ll alienate the locals and make an enemy out of them if we monopolize such a huge portion of the beach. Especially since it’s currently being used publicly.”

I took a long sip of my drink before setting it down with a thud and responding, “And I told you Ms. Gomez that we can’t make everyone happy, and we’re bound to step on a few toes with the project.”

Five pairs of eyes glanced back and forth between the two of us.

A part of me knew I needed to back off and keep from causing a scene, but the other part of me didn’t seem to care. As usual, Meghan continued to tempt me to push her buttons. Being this close to her, for this long, meant she was getting under my skin, and I wasn’t feeling charitable.
