“Okay, I just need to get something from my office, and I’ll go.” I gave her a weak smile before hurrying away. On the way back to my office, I walked past rows and rows of cubicles, but I didn’t see any of them, and I didn’t stop. Not until I reached the other side of the floor and was safely behind my own door.

My heart was hammering wildly against my chest.

With trembling fingers, I reached for the file on my desk and dropped it. I sucked in a harsh breath, bent down and picked it up off the floor. Then I ducked into my bathroom and gripped the sink. While I waited for my heart to stop racing, I turned my thoughts over and over in my head.

Refusing to see Killian because I didn’t want him to fire me wasn’t an option.

Not if I wanted to emerge with a shred of my dignity intact.

Given that I hadn’t spoken to Killian since our conversation at the bar in Miami, I knew that him summoning me to his office, through his sister no less, couldn’t have been a good thing.

As far as I was concerned, there was nothing to discuss.

In the heat of the moment, Killian and I had gotten swept away and considering our positions in the company, and the fact that he irritated the shit out of me, it was better if we didn’t do it again.

When I felt calmer, and in better control of my emotions, I stepped out of my bathroom and into the office with my head held high. This time, when I walked back across the room, I held the file at my side and kept a smile on my face.

I wavered when I stepped into Killian’s office, and the door clicked shut behind me.

Why could I smell him from where I was standing?

And why was I suddenly imagining myself draped over his desk with nothing on?

“Thank you for coming in right away.” Killian unfasted a button on his jacket and pushed back his chair. “I know you have a lot of work to do, so I won’t take up too much of your time.”

“What did you want to see me about?”

“I’ve gone over your ideas for the project, and it makes sense to extend the timeline,” Killian replied, his blue eyes never leaving my face. “I also think it’s important to reach out to the local community and try and establish some kind of truce with them.”

I blinked. “What?”

“You were right. There’s no need to antagonize them, and I won’t be moving forward with my plan to claim more of the water.”

“Okay, what the hell is this?”

Killian tilted his head to the side, and his eyebrows drew together. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Bullshit.” I covered the distance between us and slammed the file onto his desk. “I don’t know what you’re doing, but you need to stop. I don’t want you to be nice to me.”

“Excuse me?”

“You’re being nice because of….what happened between us. Stop it.”

Killian raised an eyebrow. “Don’t flatter yourself, Meg. This has nothing to do with what happened. Your ideas made more sense when we were on the site. That’s why I’m agreeing.”

“No, you’re agreeing out of pity. Cut it out.”

“Are you trying to tell me how to do my job, Meg? Because if you think you can do a better job, by all means….”

I dug my nails into my palms and leaned over the desk. “I’m not trying to tell you how to do your job.”

Killian stepped out from behind the desk and came to a stop a few feet away. “You wouldn’t survive one meeting with the board of directors, or the investors.”

“You want to bet?”

Killian snorted. “It would be a waste of time.”

I stepped towards him and tilted my head back. “It would be a waste of my time, not yours.”
