Killian studied me, his face giving nothing away. “There’s no winning with you, is there? Take the win, Meg. Your ideas are good, and I’m not the only one who thinks that. The whole team agrees with you too.”

“I don’t believe you.”

Killian gave me a bored look. “I can call them in, and you can ask them yourself.”

Why was he being nicer to me?

I didn’t like it.

I didn’t like it one goddamn bit.

Because it meant he was no longer seeing me the same way. I was no longer a valuable employee who was a pain in the ass, and his sister’s best friend. Instead, he kept looking at me like he was seeing me for the first time.

It was unsettling.

And I kept replaying our night in the elevator and imagining what it would be like to give in to him again.

Only this time I pictured us on the couch in his office.

Or on a king-sized bed.

Fuck.

I took a few steps back and shook my head. “Never mind. I should get back to work unless there is something else you need.”

Killian shook his head. “No.”

I felt his eyes on the back of my head as I walked away, and it made the desire pool in my stomach.

What the hell was happening?

KILLIAN

I tookmy usual seat at the head of the table and set down my travel mug.

One by one, the board members trickled into the conference room, with the last one, a silver haired woman with glasses perched on her nose pulling the door shut behind her. As soon as she did, I sat up straighter and glanced around the room at the well-dressed men and women around me.

Chairs made screeching noises as they were pulled out.

Conversation rose and fell while everyone settled.

Then Richard, the head of the board, rose to his feet and fastened a button on his jacket. He clasped his hands behind his back and cleared his throat. “Good morning, everyone. Thank you for coming in on such short notice.”

Silence settled across the room.

“I’m going to get right to it. You all have files in front of you regarding the newest project we’ve undertaken—the Miami beach resort.”

I frowned and flipped the folder open.

“As you all know, a team flew out to the construction site and spent a few days evaluating the situation. Given the importance of the project, and the changes in timeline and blueprints, we’ve come to believe that another smaller branch will need to be opened up in order to oversee the project.”

A murmur of confusion rose through the air.

I glanced up from the folder. “Mr. Gilmore, I don’t understand why it’s necessary to open up a branch.”

“Of course, Mr. Holt. Considering the nature of the project, we thought it was important to be able to have a team on the ground rather than sending them back and forth. It’ll be less disruptive this way.”
