“Ahhh. You need my help.” He chuckled. “That’s why you’re really here. Isn’t it?”

He didn’t wait for my reply.

“Once again, sister, you need me. That’s what you callpower. When someone needs you, you hold power over them.”

“This was a mistake!” I bit out and then spun around.

“Wait! Sadie, wait…please.”

With my back turned to him, I said, “You think everything is a game, Finn.”

He sighed heavily.

“It’s not,” I added.

“We’re both a product of this cruel world and these unfair circumstances. Let’s just call it like is. You deal with it your wayand I deal with it my way. Except I’m locked up in here at your mercy.”

I turned around. “You are and you’re going to stay that way.”

“But you need those devils back, don’t you?” He laughed. “Quite frankly, I don’t know what you see in them. Besides their ability to fuck you for hours on end, I just don’t get it.”

“You’re a waste of space,” I spat out.

He guffawed. “Oh, trust me, sister, when I say this. There have been times when you were close enough to my prison cell when I could hear them fucking you. Must be so tiresome to have to please three men several times a day just to keep them fed.”

“You seem to think they’re using me. We feed from each other.”

“Ahhh, now I see. It’s how you got magic after I took it.”

“Yes, Finn. My demons have magic too.” I smiled.

“So you like being their whore. No wonder.” He shrugged.

I bit my tongue. “Why do you have to be so cruel to people?”

“Don’t you get it. You just said it. Life is a game. I want to win too. I want to honor our father’s name too. I am a Carrier just as much as you are. And I am your brother. I’m a male carrier, so I’m supposed to have power.”

“But you don’t accomplish that by tearing others down.”

“Well, why not? I mean…how else would I become powerful. No power figure—no leader—ever mingles on the bottom. I want to be the law.The one and only law.”

I was a little disturbed that all he cared about was being on top.

“That’s not what a leader is, Finn. I suggest you read up on the greatest leaders of our past. You might learn something.”

“But father said I would need to pave my own path because—”

“This isn’t what father meant. I assure you,” I snapped.

Finn looked down at his hands. “I’m sorry I tried to kill you.”

“Are you really?”

He pressed his palms together and begged, “Give me a chance please. Listen, I’ll help you reach those…sex-thirsty devils even if you decide to keep me here a little longer.”

“A little longer?” It was almost as if he just knew he would get out somehow.

“Yeah. A little longer. I can’t bear to stay here. This is cruel. I’d…I’d rather be dead than this.”
