With a newfound confidence, I stood up and whispered the spell that I believed would allow me to escape. I closed my eyes, focusing all my energy on the words.

“Nebulae. Asente. Auxpar. Temps.”

I stood up, holding the necklace tightly in my hand. I repeated the incantations, tracing my fingers over the markings on the wall as I spoke.

“Nebulae. Asente. Auxpar. Temps.” Over and over again, I said the words, squeezing the necklace hard between my fingers.

The walls of the prison began to vibrate and a bright light appeared, just a few feet in front of me. I felt a rush of excitement as the light grew brighter, enveloping me in its warm embrace. I closed my eyes, focusing all my energy on the spell, and when I opened them again, I found myself standing in the heart of the mansion in Nebulae.

I stepped forward, my heart racing with excitement and fear. The light from the portal had faded, and I was now completely surrounded by darkness. I cautiously made my way through the empty mansion, the only sound was the echo of my footsteps on the hardwood floors.

As I walked through the halls, I couldn't help but feel a sense of pride for what I had accomplished. I had used my owndetermination and combined it with Finn's findings to break the suppression spell and travel through time. I felt empowered and ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.

As I continued to explore, I noticed small details that were different from my previous time here. A painting was slightly crooked, and a vase was missing from its usual spot. These small differences made me realize that I truly was in the past, and I couldn't waste any time.

I wracked my brain for anything I might remember from my last visit here, when I was with Altair, Morpheus, and Dominik. But I was unsettled; this wasn’t the same place. It must have been before they were sent away, before they got here. The drifts of cobwebs clinging in the upper corners of the walls were proof enough. Their housemaid, Minerva, would never let that shit fly. Every step I took felt like I was crossing into new, unknown terrain, and a sense of fear settled in the bottom of my stomach. I held on tight to the mood pendant, a small comfort in the vast unknown, and my only ticket out of here if something went array.

But still, I couldn’t help but be happy about the feat I accomplished, and I did it myself. Well, Finn helped too, figuratively speaking, but it was my determination that led me exactly where I wanted to be.

“I did it,” I whispered, my voice echoing throughout the hollow room.

Now that I had demonstrated to Apollyn that he could never hold me hostage or control me, I had more work to do.

What had my sister done to make Apollyn so mad?

Chapter 31

APOLLYN

Imade my way to the cell, eager to find out if Sadie was ready to take the next step. I needed to act now, especially with the unwelcome, underhanded recent turn of events.

But as I approached, I felt a knot form in the pit of my stomach. The door was slightly ajar and the cell was empty. I pushed the door open, my eyes sweeping the room for any sign of my prisoner.

My eyes blazed, reflecting the searing rage that coursed through my veins.

"Fucking incompetent turdholes! How did you let her escape?" I roared.

The guard immediately cowered in abject terror, his body trembling uncontrollably as my voice thundered through the hallway. Before he had a chance to flee, I lashed out with lightning speed, snapping his neck with a violent flick of my wrists. He crumpled to the ground, a lifeless corpse in an instant.

I stepped inside, looking about, but there was nothing. No trace of the barriers I had used to suppress use of magic, no hint of Sadie Carrier's presence. It was as if she had never been there at all. She had managed to slip through my fingers.

I paced the cell, trying to piece together what had happened. Had someone helped them escape? Or had they discovered a way to break my spell on their own? The thought of another traitor in my midst was worrisome and unacceptable.

I let out a roar of frustration, sending the bucket in the corner flying across the room. I ran my hand over the wall, searching for any signs of a break in the magic. But there was nothing, no indication of how she had escaped or where she had gone.

I clenched my fists in frustration, anger rising within me. Sadie was more powerful than I had anticipated, and it was clear that she was not going to be easy to control.

There were tiny markings on the wall down in one small corner, written in a language I barely recognized. I walked over to the wall, bent down, and examined the strange script. I could feel the power radiating from the markings, where it shouldn’t have been. Not only did Sadie discover a loophole to the suppression spell, but she also found a way to completely teleport herself out of here.

I couldn't let her get away. Not when I was so close to achieving my goal. The audacity of her to escape.

I flew out of the cell and barely avoided tripping over the lifeless body of the guard. I sprinted towards my study, desperate for a moment of peace. I grabbed a nearby bottle of whiskey, the only comfort I thought I had, and then threw it back on the shelf with a thud, knowing it wouldn't help me escape my reality.

Controlling Sadie wasn’t easy. Demanding her not to do something made her want to do it even more. All the tests I had given her—she passed them with flying colors. The tasks I laid out in front of her—she accomplished them with superior abilities. She—an earthbound mortal—had surpassed every pupil I’d had the fortune to tutor in every way. Even my sons, who had their own talents, purpose, and place within my vision. She had surpassed them all with her extraordinary aptitude to combine and bend different forms of magic to her will.

Sadie had grown into her powers and proven her worth time and time again. She was determined and she wasn’t afraid to take risks. I understood what my sons saw in her. Over a decade ago when one of my fellow men brought the news to me that my sons may have been allowing a child witch to feed off their magic, I had laughed in their face. I didn't take the situation at face value. After all, we were dealing with other issues in Shadow World, and the possibility of a mere child knowing our secrets, our magic, was the least of my worries. Knowing what I know now, I understood why my sons sought to keep her existence away from me.

Sadie Carrier wasn't meant to be controlled by me or anyone else. Perhaps she had a purpose, a destiny, that was greater than anything I could have imagined.
