He adds, "I need you to keep your cool up there."

Seething rage boils in my belly. I scowl, stating, "Noah's going to get what's coming to him."

He frowns, declaring, "It's better if you let me handle him and keep Blakely's best interest in mind."

"I always have my wife's best interest in mind," I assure him.

He crosses his arms over his chest, challenging me with his stare.

I point out, "We're wasting time."

He gives me a final lecture, "I mean it, Riggs. Keep your cool."

I say nothing.

He mutters, "Why do I feel like I'm going to regret this?"

"Time to go," I insist.

He releases a deep breath, shaking his head. He orders his guys, "Have the SUV wait on the top level. You guys stay here in case I need you." Kalim gets out of the van, and so do I.

We step into the elevator and Kalim inserts a key and hits the penthouse button.

I comment, "I should have worked for Interpol."

He chuckles. "It comes in handy sometimes, but you have to take the things before you leave." He gives me a wink, then his face falls. He pulls his gun out and unlocks the safety. He holds it in front of him.

My blood pounds harder through my veins. I squeeze my fist to my side, trying to stay calm, knowing I need to use my head in this situation but not trusting I will.

The elevator rises, moving slowly through all thirty stories. My pulse skyrockets with every floor. The elevator nears the penthouse, and Kalim steps in front of me, stating, "I'm going out first."

I grind my molars but don't fight him. He's the one with the gun.

The doors open, and Kalim steps out, barking, "Don't move!"

I exit the elevator and freeze. Madelyn's lifeless body lies in a pool of dried red blood with a bullet in her skull.

Noah stands next to Blakely. She's sprawled on the couch with her eyes open, and my worst nightmare comes true. King Madden's curled against her, whining and licking her cheek.

The faint rise of her chest is the only thing that assures me she isn't dead. I snarl, "What did you drug her with?"

King Madden rises between her and the couch, pinning his gaze on me for a brief moment. Then his whines turn to barks. He jumps on the armrest and bares his teeth at Noah, growling.

Noah's eyes widen, darting between Kalim and me.

"Get your hands in the air," Kalim orders.

He slowly obeys. His voice falters as he threatens, "There's video footage everywhere. You should leave before my security arrives." King Madden gets louder, and Noah nervously glances at him.

I seethe, "Fuck you." I step toward him, but a door opening catches the corner of my eye.

Hugh walks out of another room, a tumbler of scotch in his hand.

"What the fuck is he doing here?" I ask.

"Well, well, well. Just who I wanted to see," Hugh snarls, not noticing Kalim or the gun.

"Don't move," Kalim orders, aiming the Glock at him.
