“Thank goodness Matteo brought me back.”

I glance in the rearview mirror to see a dreamy expression on Serafina’s face. I’m not used to it. She’s always hard. Now, she looks soft.

“Someone has a crush,” Adelina teases her.

“I do not. I just appreciate that he saved me, is all.”

“Hey,” I say, “I saved you, too.”

Serafina shrugs. “Yeah, but it was mostly Matteo. I could’ve fallen into a coma if he hadn’t woken me up.”

“All he used was water,” I remind her. “You were alive. You were fine.Arefine.”

“Either way, I’m alive because of him.”

I shake my head. There’s no winning with Serafina.

Pia reaches over and places her hand on my arm. I smile at her.You saved my life, she signs.

I chuckle. “Damn straight, I did.” I grip her hand and kiss it. She blushes that pretty color, looking like a goddess sent to earth just for me. “And I’d do it again and again.”

My father,she signs.

“I know. He almost got you, but I stopped that. So don’t worry.” I pause. “That reminds me, how did his men manage to grab you three? If he knows where we live … Shit.”

“Uh, that’s not how that happened …” Adelina says. Serafina swats her arm and shushes her.

I frown. “What do you mean?”

“It was Serafina’s idea.”

“Hey!” Serafina turns to me. “Not true.”

I wait.

She huffs. “Ok. Maybe … true.” It’s Adelina’s turn to swat her arm. “Fine. I suggested we leave the house.”

I almost stomp on my breaks. “What?!”

“It was just supposed to be a fun day. No need to get all huffy about it.” She crosses her arms and rolls her eyes.

“Drop the attitude, Serafina. It was your idea to leave the one place that kept all of you safe! You put Pia and Adelina in danger. Fuck, Serafina!”

She sinks deeper in her seat. “I’m sorry, ok? I didn’t think that was going to happen.”

“That’s just it. You weren’t thinking. But I told you that if you left, you could get hurt. That’s why I implemented that rule. Not because I’m some asshole, but because I wanted you all to be safe.”

“But you saved us, so what’s the problem?”

God, her flippant attitude is going to drive me fucking insane. “Because I wouldn’t have had to do that if you remained safe at home.” I almost run into a car in front of me, swerving out of the way.

Pia places her hand on my arm again, comforting me.

She just wanted to have fun,she signs.

I sigh. “What? Now you’re defending Serafina?”

Pia shrugs.I wanted to leave, she admits.
