“Yeah, what’s that about?”

They share a look before laughing.

Pia squeezes my hand.

“Why are you two laughing?” I ask.

Serafina points at us. “You two finally had sex, didn’t you?”

I almost drop the spatula in my hand, and Pia freezes beside me. “What makes you say that? And for the record, our sex life is none of your concern.”

“No, it’s just obvious.” Serafina shrugs. “A death-defying event yesterday will make anyone close. We’ve never seen you two so touchy-feely. It’s kind of obvious.”

“And what would you two know about sex? Hmm? You’ve never dated.”

Serafina pouts. “Because you’ve never let us.”

“One doesn’t need to experience things in life to understand them,” Adelina says.

I sigh. “Fine.” I turn back to the stove and crack an egg into a pan. Pia catches my eye and smiles. It’s like a secret between us, though apparently not, given my sisters deduced what Pia and I got up to last night.

“The only way we’re ever going to have sex,” Serafina says, “is when we’re married. Which sucks because Dario is going to pick the worst man for me. I just know it.”

“Dario doesn’t want to talk about sex with his sisters,” I grumble.

“Ooh.” Serafina slaps the table. “I have an idea. Why don’t you marry me off to Matteo.”

Everyone in the room looks at her.

Serafina sinks into her seat. “What? It’s an idea.”

“A terrible idea,” I tell her. “Matteo is just as wild as you are. If you two were married, you’d burn the whole world down. No, when I make a match for you, Serafina, it’ll be with a man who can keep you in line.”

“And what about Adelina, then?” Serafina points at her. It’s Adelina’s turn to sink into her seat. “What kind of man would you marry her off to?”

“A man who’s worthy of her.”

“And I don’t get that kind of consideration?”

“Of course you do, Serafina. That’s why I would marry you to a man who can help balance you out. I’d do the same for Adelina. In fact, someone like Matteo would be better suited to Adelina.”

Adelina scrunches up her nose. “But he’s just a biker. I’d rather be married to a respectable mafia man.”

“See?” Serafina raises her hand. “Adelina doesn’t even want Matteo.”

“End of discussion.” I finish making the eggs and put them on a plate for each of us. The plates cling against the table once I set them down. “I’ll choose the best matches for you when it’s time. Now, let’s eat.”

At least my sisters listen to me for once and dig into their food. Pia sits down next to me and takes my hand underneath the table. I gaze into her eyes, feeling content that she’s mine.

Even though the prospects for my sisters’ marriages are in question, there’s one thing about I’m sure of—the marriage I have with Pia is turning out better than I ever could have expected.

CHAPTER15

Pia

Isink into the bathtub, close my eyes, and relax, surrounded by soapy bubbles and the smell of vanilla. I can’t remember the last time I had a bath. In my tower, I only had access to a shower—a small, very cramped shower with barely any room to turn around in. Whenever I asked my father if I could leave and take a bath in one of the many bathrooms, he’d tell me to just be grateful for the shower I had. He told me he could take that away from me, too, if I didn’t stop asking to leave my tower. And then he’d tell me that he’d judge me for being stinky if he was forced to remove my shower. The mind games he played with me were more torture than any of his whippings.

I’m still getting used to this new luxury, but I’m gladly taking advantage of it.
