“Are you ready to get started?” Marcelle asks me.

I nod. “Please.”

He reaches under the counter and brings out a maroon ring box and slowly opens it. The four-carat cushion-cut solitaire set on an eternity band sparkles under the lights.

Violet gasps. “Oh my god, Brady, it’s too much.” She shuts the box.

I laugh and slowly open it back up. “Nothing is too much for you. Should we see if it fits?”

Our eyes meet, and she nods. I remove the ring from the box, take her left hand in mine, and slip the ring on her ring finger.

“It’s a perfect fit,” Marcelle says, sounding pleased.

“I went for something classic that’s still a little flashy. Kind of like the woman wearing it.”

She places her hand on my cheek and kisses me. “I love it.”

“Are you sure?” I arch an eyebrow. “Because if not, you can choose whatever you like.”

Violet’s shaking her head before I finish speaking. “No, I want this one. You chose it.”

“Do you think your mom will approve?”

We both laugh. My meeting with her parents went all right until we told them we were engaged and that she’d be moving in with me. Her parents both shouted rapid-fire Korean, none of which I understood, and I think Violet probably only told me half of everything they said. But the gist was they didn’t understand how she could be engaged to a man she’d just met who was already a parent outside of marriage. And why wasn’t there a ring?

So we’re not off to the best start, but I have every confidence I can win them over. And if not, Violet and I will be fine either way.

“I approve, and that’s all that matters.” She kisses me again until Marcelle clears his throat, and we pull back from each other.

“Sorry.” Violet’s cheeks are red, and I chuckle.

I thank Marcelle again for his help, and we go back out to the car and drive over to Chase’s building. Once we park, we head inside and check in with the concierge. Since we’re on the list, he lets us through to the elevator.

I stab the button for the thirty-third floor when I hear a woman shout, “Hold the elevator, please!”

Violet presses and holds the door open button until a woman carrying a large box steps on. It’s not until she sets it down at her feet that I realize who she is.

“Twyla? I didn’t know you were in town.”

Her shocked gaze turns our way. “Brady? Violet? Oh my god, congratulations! My brother told me the news.” She steps around the box as the elevator doors close and gives us each a hug.

“Thanks. When did you get into town?” I ask.

“I flew in yesterday.”

“Oh, Miles didn’t mention it.”

She bites her lower lip. “He doesn’t exactly know yet.”

Violet’s head tilts. “Are you here to surprise him?”

“No… I actually moved here. At least temporarily.” She cringes.

“Oh my god, that’s awesome!” Violet envelops her in another hug.

“Thanks. I’m hoping my brother will think so. I’m not sure if he’ll feel like I’m cramping his style or what, but I needed to get away from the East Coast. It reminds me of how my life imploded, so I took a leave of absence from work and found a job house-sitting for some big-time tech executive who’s in Asia for a few months. I always love San Francisco when I visit, so I figured, why not?” She shrugs.

“And the place you’re living is in this building?” I ask.
