Violet looks giddy with excitement.

“Yeah. Oh my god, I didn’t even hit the button for my floor.” She turns toward the panel, arm outstretched, then lets it drop. “Thirty-three. That’s where I’m headed too.” She turns back around to face us. “I haven’t even asked… what are you guys doing here?”

“There’s a get-together tonight to celebrate our engagement with some of the team. Chase has been forced to host.” I can’t help my snicker. “He lives on the thirty-third floor.”

She smiles. “That’s the same floor I’m on.”

Well, this should be interesting, to say the least.

The elevator dings and the doors open.

“Here, let me get that box for you.” I bend and pick it up.

“Oh thanks. It’s the last of my things that I sent ahead.” She leads us down the hall toward her apartment, and when we stop in front of apartment eleven, I realize her door is directly across from Chase’s.

“Chase is right across the hall from you,” I tell her.

“No way! It’ll be nice to see a familiar face.”

“Yeah, definitely. Can’t wait to see how it turns out.” I grin.

Violet gives me a strange look, probably wondering why the hell I’m acting so weird.

“Oh shit, is my brother in there? I don’t want him to find out like this. I should—”

Chase’s door whips open without warning, and I turn to see him filling the doorframe. “Thought I heard you out here. What the hell, are you trying to piss off all my—” He comes to an abrupt halt when he notices Twyla standing with us.

“Funny thing, we just met your new neighbor.” When I nod toward Twyla, all the color drains from Chase’s face, and he looks as if he might be sick.

Oh yeah, this is going to bereallyinteresting.
