“She’s good at that,” I admit.

“I couldn’t do it. I don’t remember what happened after that but she took off and I chased after her. I thought she was going to go after you so I followed but it was raining and she was speeding…” He stops speaking as a sob breaks free. I wait for him to continue but he’s crying so hard.

“She lost control of her car and spun out.” I turn to see Allison standing near the kitchen. I want to jump to my feet but I can’t move. “She crashed into a tree, was rushed to hospital and they tried to save her but they couldn’t. There was a choice to be made and I… made it.” Tears stream down her cheeks.

“What choice?” Rook asks. Knight has his face buried into Rook’s chest as he cries, the sight breaks me. Allison keeps her tearful gaze on me as she answers.

“I love that girl more than you will ever understand because I chose her. I chose to save Amelia over her mother.” My eyes widen and my mouth drops open in shock. “I knew from the start you were her father. Christine knew she could manipulate Knight, she wanted one of you to make her a kept woman so she could live the lavish lifestyle of amafiawife.” She spits the word like it burns her tongue. “You wouldn’t commit to her, so she went after Knight. I don’t know why she didn’t come to you about the baby, she never wanted her. I begged Christine not to get rid of the baby. She tried.” Anger like I have never felt before surges inside me. “She was too far along. She was my sister, but she wasn’t a saint.”

“What did you do, Allison?” I say barely above a whisper, she wipes the tears from her eyes and stands tall as she moves toward me leaving a couple feet of space between us as she holds my stare.

“I told them to save the baby. They tried to help Christine but she died three weeks later in the hospital. I lied, she never filled out the birth certificate, I did. I never named you on it because I blamed you and your family for taking my sister from me.” I strike out and wrap my hand around her throat and squeeze, the twins jump to their feet and try to pry me off her but they can’t.

“You fucking hid her from me!” I scream in her face, she doesn’t crumble under my wrath.

“I did! And I would fucking do it again if it meant keeping her out of your sick twisted world.” I release her with a shove and watch as she falls to her ass.

“Your sister was a cunt!” I scream down at her. “So are you!” I storm past her and grab Amelia from her bed, making sure to grab the fucking teddy. Allison jumps to her feet and tries to come for Mela but I shove her back she stumbles into Knight who grips her to keep her steady. I look at both of them in disgust. Mela stirs in my hold but I don’t even look at her as I focus on these traitors.

“Please, punish me but don’t take her!” Allison screams, tears pouring from her eyes.

“You and my brother deserve each other. I’ll be back for her things tomorrow. You so much as try and come for her, I’ll have you arrested for kidnapping.” I turn and head for the door ignoring Rook’s angry glare. Mela begins to squirm in my hold and cries for Allison, who is screaming for her.

“Ally!” Mela cries out but I ignore her as I leave.

Chapter9

King

Mela hasn’t stopped crying and calling out for Allison. Kiara is trying to calm her but nothing is working. Bishop and I stand outside my room. Amelia cries harder for Allison whenever she sees me, so I thought it best to leave Kiara with her. It fucking kills me that I can’t be the one to comfort my girl. I should be able to ease her fears and pain but all she fucking wants is Allison!

“What happened?” I don’t look at Bishop as I answer.

“Knight told me what happened.”

“And then what?” He knows me well enough to know that something big would have happened for me to take Mela from Allison.

“She came out and told me that she knew I was the father from the start and didn’t name me on the birth certificate so she could keep Mela. Christine wanted to get rid of the baby and Allison stopped her! She wanted to kill my fucking daughter, Bishop!” I shout as I tug at the strands of my hair. He reaches out and places a hand on my shoulder about to say something when the room door flings open.

“Guys, something’s wrong.” I push past Kiara and freeze when I see my girl struggling to breath.

“What the fuck happened?” I shout.

“I don’t know!” Kiara answers in a panic.

“What do we do?” I ask.

“Fuck!” Bishop snaps before pulling his phone from his pocket and dialing someone, I rush over to Mela and gather in my arms and hate that I don’t know what to do. “Where are you, she needs you?” I stare at Bishop for a moment and it clicks, Allison. “Upstairs, King’s room hurry she can’t breathe.” Bishop hangs up his phone as I try and soothe my girl and rock her in my arms, I hear the front door smash open then footsteps pounding against the wooden floors. Bishop and Kiara step out of the way as Allison and the twins come running in. She doesn’t hesitate to jump straight on the bed and yank Mela from my arms, cradling her against her chest as rummages through her purse for something.

“It’s okay, baby girl. Hang on, okay? Deep breaths, baby. You know how to do this.” Mela nods up at Allison whilst gasping for air and it fucking kills me to see it.

“Do something!” I scream at her. She cuts me a scathing look.

“Shut the fuck up, asshole. She’s having an asthma attack because of you!” she screams right in my face. She places a white mask thing over Mela’s face and gets her to hold it while she places an inhaler in the other end and pumps it twice, the mask fills with what looks like smoke before Mela inhales it. She does this a couple more times before Mela finally takes her first proper breath in what feels like hours. Allison chucks the stuff to the side as she crushes Mela against her chest, both of them clinging to each other. I slump as guilt wars inside me. I nearly killed my daughter because I was pissed off at Allison. She would have died if it wasn’t for her! I slowly climb off the bed and run my hand over Mela’s head and smile at her.

“I’m so sorry, Mela. I love you, sweet girl.” I ignore Allison’s gasp as I carry on. “I promise I won’t hurt you anymore.” Allison looks at me with a questioning stare as I stand straight. “The twins will take you home. I’ll pay for everything you and Mela need. I’ll cover the tuition for you to go back to college and I’ll pay for a nanny for Mela so she doesn’t have to go to that school when you have class. You won’t have to work again. All you have to do is promise to look after my… daughter and love her like her mother should have.” Her eyes are red and puffy from crying. More tears fall and I feel like a piece of shit for tormenting Allison when all she did was love Mela like a mother should.

“King…”
