He presses his lips into a firm line. “You know who did it?”

Danny sighs heavily. “Curtis doesn’t mean to be rude, do you?” he says, giving him a pointed look. “Tell us why Jolene hates you,” he adds. “You said before that she does.”

“I had a thing with Arthur Taylor,” I say, and he doesn’t look surprised. “She wanted him.”

“Were you serious?”

I shake my head. “No, just a casual thing. How long have you worked for her?”

“I told you, we don’t work for her,” snaps Curtis.

“Then how do you know her?” asks Rosey, “Seeing as you’re so adamant she doesn’t own your arse.”

“We’re helping her out,” he replies.

“She really talks like . . .” I trail off and bite my lip like I didn’t mean to say that. “Never mind.”

“No, go on,” Curtis pushes.

“Well, she isn’t very nice about you. Calls you her dog’s bodies, says you do her running around.” They exchange a look. “I might be wrong. I just get the impression she really thinks you’re beneath her. She doesn’t talk to me about it, it’s just things I hear when she’s on the phone or talking to Arthur.”

“I know what you’re doing,” Curtis announces, a small smile playing on his lips. “It’s not going to work.”

“I’m not doing anything. I was just telling you how she is.”

“You want to cause a divide.”

“Why would I?” I ask innocently.

“Because you’re Arthur Taylor’s woman. Because you’re part of The Perished Riders MC. Should I go on?”

I try not to look surprised, and Rosey grins. “I like a man who does his homework.”

“Fuck, Curtis, not now,” Danny hisses.

“She’s not stupid, mate, she’s pretending. She already knows you beat the crap out of her, and I’m pretty sure she thought she’d play us tonight to get shit on Jolene, so you weren’t gonna get a fuck out of her anyway, but nice try.”

Rosey drinks her beer, leaning back casually in her seat. I try to mirror her actions, but I can’t hide the fact I’m crapping myself. This suddenly just took a turn, and I can’t see a way out as I glance towards the fire exit that seems too far away. “Please tell me she hired you dickheads to be her personal on-call hitmen,” she says, her eyes wide with delight.

“Because you’re going to kill us first?” asks Curtis, throwing his head back in laughter.

Rosey smashes her bottle on the side of her chair, and I flinch in shock, but then Curtis howls in pain. The jagged part of the bottle is in the side of his neck, and it happened so fast, it doesn’t quite register as I stand quickly, almost toppling backwards. Danny yells something I don’t catch because of my heart beating loudly in my ears.

Rosey releases her hold on the bottle, leaving it in his neck. “Tell me again how you attacked Meli.” She goes back to her casual pose, like she didn’t do anything out of the ordinary, and I realise this is the first time I’ve seen her in work mode, and it’s terrifying.

“You fucking crazy bitch,” yells Danny, rushing to his brother and grabbing the bottle.

“I wouldn’t pull that if I was you. He’ll bleed out,” Rosey mutters like she’s bored. “Let’s talk.”

“Jolene will have you killed,” Curtis warns. His brother grabs a blanket lying casually over one of the chairs and wraps it around the bottle to try and stem the slow trickle of blood.

“I want answers,” Rosey continues, “and you’re going to give them to me.”

“You won’t get anything from us,” yells Danny, watching his brother helplessly.

“I am so disappointed,” Rosey continues. “I thought you’d at least pull out a gun. You came unarmed to this date, which tells me you either massively underestimated us as women, or you really thought this was a date.” She then pulls out her own gun with a wink.

“You have no idea what you’ve started,” Curtis mutters.
