“I knew what I was doing the second I lured your little brother to a flat where Arthur Taylor was waiting for him. Is that what this is all about? Is that why you’re helping Jolene to get Arthur back?”

“We’re not telling you anything,” snaps Danny. “I’m calling an ambulance.”

“Let me make you a deal. I’ll let you call an ambulance if you answer some questions.”

“You don’t call the fucking shots,” he yells. She throws a glass from the table in his direction, and when he dodges it, she snatches his mobile from his hand. Then, she holds up a second. “I already got your brother’s.”

“Meli, call an ambulance,” he begs. “This is serious.”

I stare in disbelief. This guy beat me and left me in the street, and he has the nerve to ask me. “Fuck you.”

“Excuse my friend, she’s feeling a little upset knowing you beat her and then asked her on a date. Who the hell does that?” asks Rosey. “Meli, don’t you think dating’s going downhill? You can’t trust anyone these days.”

“You never know who’s behind the mask,” I agree.

“I went on a date a few weeks back, and he was married! Wanker,” says Rosey, shaking her head.

“This is all fascinating, but can we hurry the fuck up so I can get my brother some help?”

“Who did your boss hire for the hits on Meli and Albert Taylor?” asks Rosey, her voice suddenly serious.

“How the fuck do we know?” snaps Curtis, then he groans in pain.

“You were giving it the big one just then. I thought you had more responsibility in this.”

“She’s at the top of it all,” he growls, “of E15.”

Rosey frowns. “She’s running the show on her own?”

He nods. “She took over a few months back. Not even her brothers knew.”

“And now, she wants to take over Arthur’s side of things?”

He shrugs. “She’s got bigger plans, I think. She wants his power and the respect he has. She’ll only get that by sticking by his side. I think the wedding is for real, and she’s probably trying to have his kid too. But she doesn’t blink an eye when she orders a kill, and I wouldn’t put it past her to wipe out everyone in his life until he only had her.”

“Who killed her brothers?” I ask.

“Some guy. She didn’t tell us his name, just that he hated her brothers and had wanted to get to them for years. She put a down payment to lure him in, a hotel that was in her married name, because she had no access to funds while her brothers were still alive. She then agreed a price for once they were dead.”

I pace, suddenly feeling nauseous. Danny sees it as an opportunity to grab me, pulling me to him. Rosey doesn’t seem phased, she simply arches a brow. “What exactly are you going to do with her, you idiot? I have a gun.”

“Snap her fucking neck before you’ve pulled the trigger,” he hisses, placing a hand on my forehead while the other holds me tightly around the waist.

“And then what?” she asks with a laugh. “Use her body as a shield?”

I glare at her. “I don’t think we should make suggestions, Rosey,” I say as calmly as I can because inside, I’m freaking the fuck out.

“Just call a fucking ambulance,” he yells.

She stands, shaking her head. “I’m not going to do that, Danny. I just wanted answers, and now, you've ruined it. I’ve had a really bad week, and this just tops it off.” I feel him pulling my head and wonder if it’s really possible for him to snap my neck like this. Curtis seems drowsy, his head keeps dropping forward like he can’t hold it up.

“I’m sick of women telling us what to do,” he shouts. “Curtis, don’t go to sleep,” he adds, kicking his brother’s foot.

“He’s bleeding out. You need to release Meli, or I’m not helping you.”

“Please,” he almost whispers. He holds me tighter, and I gasp. “Don’t make me kill her. I just want you to help him.”

“You did this yourself,” Rosey lectures as she leans forward. I watch in horror as she pulls the bottle from Curtis’s neck and blood begins to spurt out to the rhythm of his heart. A painful cry leaves Danny, but he doesn’t release me. “You only have minutes, maybe less, before he dies,” says Rosey. “You need to cover his wound.”
