“Okay. So what do we do now?”

“This is now our first date. I’ll get dinner, you drink your champagne and tell me about you and your family.”

“Alright,” I say, taking a sip of my champagne. It’s the only alcohol I drink. I also drink it in limited quantities. I watch as he moves around the tiny kitchen, plating up spaghetti and meatballs. “That looks delicious.”

“It is. It’s from Luciano’s.”

“That’s my favorite restaurant,” I tell him.

“Mine too.”

“Can I help with anything?”

“No. I’ve got it.” He brings a basket of bread, napkins, and silverware to the table. Then he goes back to get the plates. He sits one down in front of me and sits back across from me. I drape my cloth napkin across my lap, and he does the same thing. I take a bite and moan a little bit. I haven’t eaten since breakfast, and I’m starving. Tyson groans, and I look up at him.

“What?”

“You can’t make noises like that. Not if I’m supposed to behave like a gentleman.” He adjusts himself under the table, and my mouth goes dry. I reach for my champagne, taking a gulp.

“Sorry,” I say, but I can’t help my grin.

“Tell me about your family.”

“Oh. That’s fun. I am a triplet, as I believe I said.”

“Yes. The photographic memory triplets.”

“We are affectionately referred to as The Beaufort Three.”

“Of course you are,” he says, laughing.

“Anyway. We were in a car accident at Thanksgiving 2021, and we lost our parents. We almost lost Courtnee too, but she pulled through.”

“Oh my God, that’s terrible. I’m so sorry for your loss.”

“I never know what to say when people say that, but thank you. It means a lot.”

“Any other family?”

“No. Grandma passed away last September, so it’s just us girls now.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Thank you. What about you? Your family?”

“My dad passed away ten years ago,”

“I’m sorry. I know how terrible that is.”

“I know, but my mom still lives in Ohio, in the house we grew up in. She won’t leave. She’s lonely. My parents had a special kind of love. I’ve never seen anything like it.”

“So did my parents. I think that my mom knew Dad died and she went with him.”

“She doesn’t leave the house except to go to the doctors. I have someone do her cooking, cleaning, and shopping because she won’t do it. She just sits in the living all day and watches romantic comedies and then goes to bed and does it all over again. My brothers and I take turns being there with her. Terrence is there right now.”

“You have two brothers?”

“Yes. Tyler and Terrence . They work at the production company, but I swear I’ve never seen Terrence do any actual work.”
