As soon as we got to the sidewalk, Scarlett stopped dead in her tracks. "Where are we going?"

"To grab some food."

"That's right. Now, where? What kind of place do you want?"

She thought for a moment. "A diner would be nice. I could use a burger."

"There's one just a little bit down the road. Let's go there."

The diner was packed when we walked inside. It appeared to have been freshly renovated and the walls were painted a light-yellow color. A large neon sign hung over the front door with the words 'Burger Shack' written on it. On the other side of the sign was an image of a hamburger.

We sat down at one of the booths near the window. I scanned the parking lot while Scarlett ordered her food. There was no sign that we had been followed. I was starting to wonder whether maybe Scarlett was being watched. Maybe I shouldn't have written it off as a ploy to get my attention.

When the waitress brought our order, I was almost disappointed. My burger was just ordinary and it tasted a bit bland. I ate half of it and then gave up.

I noticed that Scarlett seemed to be staring at the people coming in and out of the restaurant, but she never let her gaze linger for too long. When I asked her about it, she said that she just needed to see if anyone was following us.

"I think we're good though," I told her.

"I hope so," she replied.

After eating our meal, we went outside and walked back to the motel. I felt bad about leaving my half-finished burger behind and I was tempted to ask the waitress for another one, but I decided against it.

We walked along the path that led to the motel's entrance. I caught sight of Grayson standing outside of her room and I stopped for a second.

"Hey, what are you doing? Can we talk?"

He turned around and his eyes widened when he saw me. "Why are you here?"

"I came to see Scar."

"Great, glad to hear it," he replied sarcastically.

"You sound happy about that."

"I am. Just don't take advantage of her."

"Excuse me?"

"You heard me."

I shook my head. "She's not a piece of meat, Grayson. She's a human being who I happen to care about. You can't treat her like that."

He shrugged his broad shoulders. "Whatever you say, Drako."

"I'm serious, Grayson. If you hurt her, you will answer to me."

"I don't need to worry about that," he said with a snort. "I'm not scared of you."

I moved closer to him and pushed him out of the way. "You better start being scared of me."

"This isn't a movie, Drako. You won't win this time."

I clenched my fists. "Don't make me hurt you."

His smile was gone and his cheeks flushed red. "Get out of my way."

"No," I said, pushing him again. He stumbled backward until he crashed into the wall and slid down to the ground.
