I studied her face, trying to read her expression. "Okay then, good."

"Why are you still looking at me like that?" Scarlett asked, tilting her head to the side.

I shook my head. "Sorry. What now? Are we waiting here or what?"

The sound of footsteps approaching interrupted our conversation. I listened as they got closer and looked to see who was coming our way. A man in a black suit suddenly appeared from the shadows. I glanced at Scarlett, confused and suspicious of this stranger.

"Good morning," the man said, "my name is Henry. I had the pleasure of meeting Scarlett when she first arrived in town."

I crossed my arms over my chest but didn't speak, unsure of how to approach the situation and frustrated with Scarlett's willingness to trust strangers so easily.

Henry glanced at Scarlett and ran his fingers through his salt and pepper hair. His pale blue eyes darted between me and Scarlett until he spoke again.

"I own a diner a few miles out of town. My friends and I use it for meetings mostly, but Scarlett came in one morning. I'm afraid we probably didn't make the greatest first impression. When I sensed she was a dragon, I automatically assumed she was from Shadow Crest," he explained.

"I'm sorry, Henry," I interrupted starting to get annoyed by the cloak-and-dagger routine, "is there a point to all of this? Why did we have to come to this shithole just so you could apologize for making Scar uncomfortable?"

"No, of course not," Henry replied, looking nervous, "I avoid being seen in town for safety reasons. Like you, I would be in great danger if my identity was found out."

"Why is that? You're not a dragon," I stated, growing impatient.

"That's true. I'm not a dragon," Henry admitted, shifting his weight as he stood in front of me, "I'm a slayer."

Chapter Eight

Scarlett

Grayson's eyes widened and he looked at me in disbelief. My heart started racing as his confusion changed into anger. I looked at Henry, who seemed to be getting more anxious.

"A dragonslayer, Scar! What is wrong with you!?" He yelled, his face turning red.

"Will you just listen to what he has to say?!" I yelled back at him, tired of being treated as if I knew nothing.

"I don't mean you any harm," Henry assured him.

"Yeah, I'm sure. Why would you think I would trust anything you say?" Grayson responded.

"We are here for one specific dragon, and you are not it so calm down."

"What are you talking about?"

"A dark dragon lives in Shadow Crest. That is our only target."

"A dark dragon?" Grayson asked, shifting his gaze between me and Henry.

"Yes, a dark dragon. We just aren't sure which one it is. We haven't been able to get close enough to see them shift."

"If you don't know that, how do you plan on defeating it? You're out there by yourself with no weapon or armor!"

"That's why we need your help. We want you to join us. If you come along, you can scout the area and find out where the dark dragon hides."

"You have got to be kidding me," Grayson said, shaking his head, "I am a dragon. Why would I trust a dragonslayer?"

Henry glanced at me and shrugged.

"Grayson, will you just listen," I pleaded, knowing we would need all the help we could get to save my father.

"Scarlett, you should know better," Grayson said with a look of disappointment, "You are a dragon. These men hunt our kind."
