"Drako, get ready," Damon said, as he ran towards me, "We are going back in a few hours."

I nodded my head and glanced at Doyle, who came running up behind Damon. Before I could speak, Damon took off and I followed Doyle back inside the bar.

"What's going on?" I asked Doyle once we were inside the bar.

"I'm not sure. I just know he said we were going back later, and we weren't going to leave without her. Watch yourself, Drako. He's going to be keeping an eye on you," Doyle warned.

I sat in silence, unsure of what to say or do. If Damon was going to be watching that closely, there would be no way for me to help Scarlett without him knowing. Helping her would be me going against my horde and that kind of betrayal would not be taken lightly. It would put me in even more danger than she was in.

Chapter Ten

Grayson

After hours of listening to Henry ramble on about the dark dragon, I was no closer to figuring out which dragon it was. I made it back to the motel, exhausted and ready to give up on the whole idea of finding the dark dragon.

As soon as I walked into my motel room, I could sense that something was up. Scarlett looked worried and on edge. Outside, I heard something fly past the window and hurried outside to see what it was.

Over the trees, I caught a glimpse of them as they hovered, watching from a distance.

The creatures were ten times as long and a hundred times as heavy as any bird. Their bodies had no feathers or other coverings. They looked like giant lizards made out of mud. And they were armed with massive claws and sharp teeth that glinted in the sun as it set in the distance.

I thought about shifting, but that would only put me and Scarlett in more danger. Once they knew for sure who we were, there would be no stopping them and we were severely outnumbered. We'd have to fight our way out of here and hope we could get out of town alive. I couldn't risk that. Not now. Not when Kane was still missing.

"I'll be back," I said to Scarlett. "Get ready."

She nodded.

I took off at a run toward the monsters, catching up just as they turned and began moving away from us and landed somewhere beyond the entrance of the woods near the motel. They moved with surprising grace for their size, and even though the terrain wasn't flat, they weren't struggling much with it.

As soon as I closed in on them, one raised its clawed hand. It was a gesture meant to intimidate me, but all it did for me was make me want to kill it. The others snorted and grunted and growled, but didn't move any closer.

I stopped behind some trees and watched them leave before taking off after them again. By this point, I was breathing hard and sweating, but I kept running until they were out of sight. Even if I lost them completely, I was pretty sure I'd catch up eventually.

It felt good to be able to do something. To have an outlet for my frustration. I hadn't been able to shift since before Kane was taken and I hated feeling helpless.

A few minutes later, I was back at the motel, dripping with sweat and breathing heavily. Scarlett was standing outside, waiting patiently for me. She looked more than a little pale.

"How are you doing?" I asked her.

"I'm fine," she lied.

I shrugged and walked past her toward the door. I didn't know what else to do. There was nothing we could do. We needed to find out whether these shifters had Kane before starting a war we couldn't win.

Before I reached it, a sudden burst of wind blew through the room and slammed into my chest, knocking me backward onto my ass. A second blast followed right behind the first, making my head spin and sending everything flying across the floor. As I scrambled to get up, I realized that someone had thrown open the window. There must have been an air dragon nearby. I got to the window and scanned the area, looking for any signs of where they could be. But there was no sign of them anywhere.

Scarlett came over to join me and crouched next to me, trying to see out the window. Her face fell when she saw me looking around.

"What's wrong?" she asked.

"It looks like they got away," I said. "But there's no sign of the air dragon either."

We both watched silently for several minutes, staring out the window, hoping to spot the dragon again. Or maybe even the shifters, but the sky was clear and blue and there was nothing to be seen.

Finally, Scarlett sighed and stood up. "Well…that sucked."

I couldn't agree more. The adrenaline was still coursing through my veins and my dragon was dying to be set free. It often made me wonder how Scarlett was able to go so long without shifting. Her dragon was untamed and clumsy from the lack of freedom to learn. Thinking back on it, I realized that I had no clue what type of dragon Scarlett was. Kane never talked about it, and I had only seen her shift a couple of times. I had asked Kane about it, and he said that Scarlett's dragon was weak and it made it difficult for Scarlett to shift. That was when I decided that she couldn't possibly be my mate.

"So what do we do now?" Scarlett asked, gazing out of the window.
