"Don't you have a date or something?" I asked, unable to hide my anger over her choice to continue seeing the stranger.

"I guess I will catch up with you later then."

I watched as she walked out of the room, slamming the door behind her.

I sat back down on the bed and stared at the ceiling. What else was there to do?

There was a knock on the door.

"Come in," I called out, not bothering to look up from the ceiling.

The door opened and Scarlett came inside, looking disheveled and upset. She stepped into the room and shut the door behind her.

"Hey," she said quietly. "I'm sorry about earlier."

I shook my head. "Forget it. I just need to get some sleep."

"Are you okay?" she asked.

"Yeah," I lied. "Just tired is all."

"You don't sound very convincing."

I lifted my eyes to hers. "Look, I can't help you if I'm dead on my feet. Come to bed and let me relax for a while."

Scarlett glanced at the bed and then back at me. "Fine. But I think we should talk about this later."

I nodded. "Sure. I'm going to take a shower first, but once I'm done, we can sit down and have a conversation."

"Alright," she agreed.

I stood up and walked out of the room.

When I returned, I found Scarlett sitting on the edge of the bed and looking worried. I was glad to see that she hadn't gone out with the man from the bar. I wouldn't have been surprised if she had, but it seemed like she had enough sense to realize that there were more important things going on than some stranger's crush.

"You look exhausted," she said, laying down on the bed, "We can talk tomorrow. Get some sleep."

I climbed into the bed and lay there, staring at the wall in front of me to keep from focusing on the gorgeous woman in bed with me. It wasn't the time for those kinds of thoughts.

I wanted to get some sleep, but my thoughts kept wandering back to the fact that Kane was still missing. If the Shadow Crest shifters had him, it was all over.

Why had they left though? Why had they given me the chance to escape and then taken off instead?

After what felt like forever, I finally drifted off.

Hours later, I woke up with a start, my heart pounding in my chest and feeling like I was being watched. I listened carefully and heard nothing.

I sat up, listening again.

Nothing.

Scarlett was gone. I figured she had gone back to her room. I got out of bed and went to the window, pushing the curtains aside and peering outside. Everything looked normal. No sign of any trouble.

I slipped on a pair of jeans and a t-shirt and headed outside. The motel was mostly empty.

It was still dark outside, which made it harder to see anyone who might be watching. Behind me, I heard the sound of leaves rustling and turned to see what it was. A dark figure disappeared behind the trees, and I got a horrible feeling. I rushed to find Scarlett.

The motel room was empty and there was no sign of Scarlett anywhere. Furniture was thrown over, the window was open, and chill was still in the air.
