He looked away from me, staring out the window at the city beyond. "There's no way to know. All we can do is hope it does."

I stood up and walked over to him. I put my hand on his shoulder and squeezed lightly. "If it doesn't, then we'll have to make one hell of a run for our lives," I told him.

He frowned slightly in confusion. "What do you mean?"

"We have to get away from here," I explained. "If this fails, you need to go somewhere far away where they won't be able to find you. They aren't going to stop looking for you after they find out you betrayed your horde."

"No. No." Drako shook his head vehemently. "This is the only thing I can think of right now. You're right though. If it doesn't work, then I'll figure something else out."

I gave his shoulder another squeeze. "Let's just hope it works."

The night was quiet in the attic, but I knew that wasn't something I should be thankful for. I glanced over at the stairs leading down to the second floor. The door was shut, making it impossible for me to hear any sounds coming from below. Even so, I heard nothing.

The stillness of the house gave it an eerie feeling, but I didn't think anything was wrong until I thought I heard a soft whimper coming from another room. I turned quickly and raced towards the door.

Scarlett!

My heart pounded as I reached the door. I grabbed the handle and tried to pull the door open, but it wouldn't budge. I pushed harder, but it still wouldn't give. What did I do?

I was about to turn around and try to break through the door when I heard the sound of footsteps on the stairs. I spun around just in time to see Drako standing in the doorway.

"What are you doing?!" I shouted.

He looked confused for a moment before realizing that the noise hadn't been made by him. He opened his mouth as if to say something, but he closed it again and shook his head.

"What's going on?" Scarlett asked from behind me.

I turned back to face her, feeling a wave of relief wash over me. She looked terrified. Her hands were shaking so badly that they almost seemed to disappear into her sleeves.

"It's okay," I whispered to her.

She looked up at me, her eyes full of tears. "I heard someone crying out," she explained.

My gut tightened at the sight of those tears. "Who was it?"

She shook her head. "I don't know," she answered softly.

"Don't worry, we'll find them," I promised.

She smiled slightly. "I'm sure you will."

I pulled her close, wrapping my arms around her small frame. My body tensed up as I felt her tiny arms wrap tightly around my waist.

"It's okay," I whispered to her. "Everything's going to be alright."

Her grip loosened slightly. I held onto her tightly while I waited to hear noises coming from outside the room. There was only silence until Drako appeared in the doorway again.

"Are you two okay?" He asked.

I nodded. "Yeah. Why?" I asked.

"Someone was crying out just a few moments ago. I came up to check if everything was okay."

I nodded. "Yes. I heard the same thing. Maybe it was an animal."

"Maybe. I don't know about you, but I need a drink. Anyone else want one?" Drako asked.

Scarlett and I both nodded our heads. I watched as he disappeared back down the stairs. He poured everyone a glass, then sat down next to me and raised his in the air.
