The Shadow Dragon approached me, raising his tail as he did. He lowered it slowly, preparing to strike me. A blast of fire shot across the street. The Shadow Dragon jerked his head up to glare at the source. In the corner of my eye, I saw Grayson standing in front of me.

The Shadow Dragon leaped off me, snarling as he retreated. I sat up, my wings shaking as I clutched my wounded wing close to me. Grayson shot back up into the air. Over the trees ahead, I thought I caught a glimpse of a dragon, but figured I had imagined it once it disappeared.

My eyes met Grayson's as he approached me. He crouched beside me and reached out a hand towards my wounded wing.

"How bad is it?" he asked gently.

"Just a scratch," I mumbled, pulling my wing closer to my body. I flinched as he touched the cut. It stung like hell and bled heavily.

"Doesn't really look like a scratch to me," Grayson remarked.

"It hurts," I whimpered, squeezing my eyes shut.

"Shit," Grayson swore.

I got up from the ground once more, determined not to let the Shadow Dragon survive the fight, and flew off to find him. My thoughts drifted to Scarlett and whether she was okay, but I pushed the thoughts away, telling myself that she would find a way to survive.

Chapter Twenty-Five

Grayson

The Shadow dragons were relentless, not letting up for a second. Blow after blow, I felt myself weaken. I looked toward Drako, hoping he was doing better. I watched as one of the Shadow dragons swung its tail and struck a violent blow to Drako's face.

The momentary distraction caused me to be struck by the other shadow dragons' fire breath. My singed scales stung, and I cried out in pain. I turned towards my attacker, focused on only his destruction, and attacked. He was fast, but it did nothing to slow my onslaught. We both continued our battle, neither gaining any ground from the other. I tried to think of a way I could end this fight quickly when an idea suddenly popped into my head.

"I can't take it anymore!" I yelled, before diving forward, grabbing the dragon's tail in my jaws and pulling, causing him to fall backward on his back. I jumped off and landed beside Drako's fallen form.

"Are you alright?" I asked gently. His face was red with anger, and blood oozed from the corners of his mouth.

"Yeah," he grunted through gritted teeth. "Don't worry about me."

I knew that wasn't true, he needed medical attention. I couldn't just leave him though, especially not with the Shadow dragons surrounding us. The thought of leaving him without someone to watch over him made me uneasy.

Before I could think too much more, the Shadow dragons began their attack again. This time it was harder than ever, sending a wave of flame and smoke into the air. I ducked and hid behind some rocks, using them as shelter from the deadly fire.

Suddenly, the flames subsided, and something grabbed me by the scruff.

"No! Let go!" I screamed. "Let go now!" I struggled to free myself.

The dragon shook its head, throwing me onto my back. I let out a cry of fear as I hit the hard dirt, unable to get away. As the dragon came down towards me, I rolled under the beast's belly, barely missing being crushed by the massive beast. Its claws missed my tail and grazed along my ribs instead. The pain shot down my spine and burned like acid. My scales sizzled and bubbled. I curled my body around myself in defense, trying desperately to stop the bleeding. If I had my wing pads, I would've been able to fly away. Unfortunately, they weren't there, so I could do little to protect myself.

The dragon crouched low over me, and I held my breath until it rose to full height once again, preparing to strike again. Suddenly, the ground rumbled beneath me, causing the creature to jump and roar in shock. A dark shape swooped overhead, knocking the dragon flying backward before landing on the ground in front of me.

Its eyes were narrowed, and its lips pulled back to reveal sharp teeth. It snarled angrily at the dragon still on top of the hill, and the dragon gave a mighty leap and took to the sky, disappearing into the darkness.

The monster slowly raised its head, staring down at me with glowing red eyes. I couldn't help but stare into its face, mesmerized by the creature. I didn't know what kind of dragon it was, only that it was huge. Its horns were bigger than the top of my head.

It moved closer to me cautiously, its eyes never leaving mine. When it finally reached me, it leaned down, almost touching its nose to the ground. I felt tears welling in my eyes.

The monster suddenly lurched forward, and I found myself rolling out of its path as it charged away, crashing into trees and boulders on the way. It let loose another roar as it disappeared from sight.

My ears rang from the crash. After a few moments, I sat up and inspected my injuries, finding that the worst was a few scrapes and cuts along my back. There seemed no permanent damage done.

But when I tried to stand up, I immediately fell back down in pain. Gritting my teeth, I forced myself to push through the pain and force myself to my feet anyway.

The adrenaline pumping through my body helped to ease some of my aches and pains. I started moving away from where the monster went in the direction it had gone, in search of Drako.

I shifted into my human form as I stumbled forward. Every step sent fresh bursts of pain ripping through my chest. But I refused to give up. Eventually, the ache grew too great, and I crashed to the ground again.
